Che Xiangchen(1989-1971),originally named Che Qinghe,was born in Faku County,Liaoning Province.He was a famous educator and social activist in modern times,and one of the active advocates and promoters of civilian education.During the May 4th Movement,Che Xiangchen studied in Beijing.Under the influence of the May 4th New Culture Movement and the trend of modern civilian education,he formed his thoughts on civilian education.Che Xiangchen emphasized scientific education,opposed superstition and paid attention to the dissemination of scientific knowledge.As for women’s education,Che Xiangchen demonstrated the importance of women’s education from the perspective of individuals,families and the nation,and formulated a series of measures for women’s civilian education.Che Xiangchen pointed out that the lower class were the main producers of the society and should enjoy the right to receive education and be respected by the society.Therefore,he paid special attention to the education of the lower class people in the civilian education.Patriotism is the starting point of Che Xiangchen’s civilian education and runs through his whole life’s educational thought and practice.After graduating from university in 1925,Che Xiangchen returned to his hometown liaoning province to continue the cause of civilian education and carried out a series of practical activities of civilian education.In order to improve the quality of the people and oppose the Japanese invasion,Che Xiangchen set up civilian schools in Shenyang urban and rural areas to make up for dropouts.He later organized the Fengtian Student Civilian Education Service Group,the Fengtian Civilian Education Promotion Association and the Liaoning National Common Sense Promotion Association.Push civilian education from Shenyang to Liaoning province.Che Xiangchen’s thought and practice of civilian education promoted the development of civilian education in Liaoning,provided educational opportunities for men and women who were out of school.The school education has been perfected,to some extent,the national quality has been significantly enhanced,the social atmosphere has been significantly improved,and the national patriotic enthusiasm is unprecedentedly high.However,it also had certain limitations.In China,a semi-colonial and semi-feudal society,Che Xiangchen tried to change the appearance of old China through civilian education and realize the goal of saving the country and the people,but this road did not work well.Nevertheless,some propositions and ideas put forward by Che Xiangchen in the education of the common people also have important enlightenment and reference significance for the current education development and education system reform.
