| The translation material for this article is selected from Chapters 3 and 4 of Social Isolation and Loneliness in Older Adults: Opportunities for the Health Care System,a public Health text in the Social sciences. The text, published by NAP(The National Academies Press)in 2020,aims to study the relationship between the physical functioning of middle-aged and elderly people and their feelings of social loneliness, and to provide constructive suggestions in the related field. The words in this report are formal, the sentences are objective and rigorous, and there is no subjective color. Therefore, the translator chooses the functionalist translation theory as the guide, and discusses the translation methods and strategies from the lexical and sentence aspects.First of all,for a large number of abstract nouns, the author uses the method of determining the meaning of abstract nouns according to the context, and processing methods of concretizing and translating abstract nouns under the influence of language differences.Secondly, this text belongs to information text, and there are two types of sentences, namely inanimate subject sentences and passive sentences. For inanimate subject sentences, the author adopts the method of translating inanimate subject sentences into adverbial, object and predicate verb in Chinese sentences. For the passive sentence,it can be translated into formal passive sentence, invisible passive sentence,subject-free sentence and general subject-referring sentence. Finally, the author hopes that this translation practice can provide reference for the translation of similar texts in the future. |
