Based on the red series of works of Anish Kapoor, this paper analyzes the visual feelings brought by different forms of red-using,and explores the essential reasons and connotations of Kapoor’s use of red. This paper probes into the reasons why Kapoor chose red to create from different aspects, such as the birth background of the creator, the spiritual connotation of red in both eastern and western world, the characteristics of different red materials, and color psychology, and analyzes the suggestive role of red as the theme. The first chapter introduces the background of the artist being born in India, and analyzes the influence of western modern art on his creation according to his learning experience in England. The second chapter mainly elaborates the spiritual connotation of red in Chinese and western culture. The third chapter, also the key chapter, explains the relation of works connotation and red,by analyzing the form, the material, the space and the visual feeling of artistic works. Also in this chapter,we can notice that the color suggest has made great guiding impacts on his works,so that Kapoor’s exploration of various forms of art has a unified theme. The forth chapter, combined with the research of Kapoor’art, the author makes explanation on own works. The theme and connotation of art works are easily influenced by the suggestive role of color.Kapoor used a lot of different forms of red to create, which is subconsciously related to his visual memory in Indian time.Red is a global color. Also there are different color culture explanations in eastern and western world. As an artist across borders,Kapoor skillfully used different understandings in different regions and the suggestive effect of red in color psychology to express his thoughts on“world consciousness” and “blood and flesh”.In his works, the unity of color contributes to the unity of the theme, while the diversity of forms adds to the richness of the theme. It can be seen that the case study and thinking of Kapoor fully reflect the relationship between the form and color in artistic creation, and provide fresh ideas for the creation and research of art practitioners.
