An Action Study On Cooperative Learning For English Beginners: From The Perspectives Of Group Activities, Learner Subjectivity, And English Communicative Competence

Cooperation and communication with others not only meets the requirements of the times,but also is a vital feature of modern education and training of talents.Therefore,it is particularly important that infiltrates cooperative learning in practical teaching.The author teaches English in a public primary school of Qingdao,in which students begin to learn English from the first grade.It is found that the students with middle and low grades are more active and usually communicate each other with simple expressions.However,more and more students' enthusiasm for classroom engagement is not high with the increase of grade and the difficulty of teaching content.Meanwhile,their interest in English and communicative ability are gradually weakened,which result in low learning efficiency.After learning many practical cases of Cooperative Language Learning,the school English teachers apply it to the teaching class.The effect of learning is greatly improved with the application of this method,but there are still new problems: the role of group,the learners' subjectivity and their English communicative ability.The role of group and learners' subjectivity are the key aspects which affect Cooperative Language Learning,while students' communicative ability has a profound impact on English beginners' language learning in the future.In order to improve students' English communicative ability,the teachers carry out an action research on English beginners' Cooperative Language Learning: from perspective of group activity,learners' subjectivity,and English communicative ability.Three questions are put forward in this research:(1)How can the group play the role in primary school English classroom teaching?(2)How can learners' subjectivity play a part in primary school English classroom teaching?(3)How can students' English communicative ability be improved through Cooperative Language Learning?This action research lasts for five months and chooses 409 students who are in the fourth and fifth grade of this school as participants.It explores classroom observation,questionnaire investigation and interviews to collect data and SPSS22.0 to process statistics.The major stages are as follows: the preparatory one,the first round,the second round,the third round and the summary one.In the preparation stage,school teachers carry on the questionnaire investigation to the research subjects and summarize the main problems of Cooperative Language Learning in primary school English classroom.Furthermore,teachers conduct the research plan that focuses on the following aspects:group activity,learners' subjectivity and their English communicative ability.The first round of research mainly solves the group problem: some teaching activities are not suitable for the group,the group display time is longer and the opportunity is less,the group evaluation system is not clear,and the cooperative consciousness of individual students is not strong.The effect of group is obviously enhanced by controlling the number and time of group cooperation,increasing the opportunity of group display,refining the group rules,clarifying the group evaluation system and cultivating students' awareness of cooperation and communication.The second round of research mainly solves the problem of learners' subjectivity: the teacher does not make an adequate presupposition about the problem,the attention to the students is not enough,the evaluation of the students is single and one-sided,and the way of learning is not innovative enough.The learners' subjectivity is brought into full play through teachers' presupposition of the difficulty of the problem before class,the improvement of the attention to the students,the pertinence and inspiration of the evaluation,the improvement of the reward points and the innovation of the group learning form.The third round of research mainly solves the problem of students' English communicative ability: there are more underachievers in individual groups.Their English communicative ability is obviously increased through the stratification of task,standard request and questions.Based on the above findings and discussion,it has been proved that the application of Cooperative Language Learning in primary school English classroom can not only improve the effect of classroom teaching and respect learners' subjectivity,but also cultivate students' English communicative ability and promote their cooperation and communication.
