Urbanization is an important feature of economic development at the present stage in China.Carbon emission reduction is related to the long-term and sustainable development of China’ s economic and social development, and also an important responsibility of China for the world environment and climate change.Land urbanization is reflected in the process of transforming agricultural land into non-agricultural land and rural land into urban land. The change of land use mode, land use structure and allocation of land indicators will have an impact on the ecological climate, but also affect carbon dioxide emissions and carbon emission efficiency.Under the background of the continuous promotion of new land urbanization and the approaching date of carbon emission reduction target, the study of the impact of land urbanization on regional carbon emission efficiency in China is of great practical significance for seeking the coordinated development path of China’s land urbanization process and carbon emission reduction, optimizing the choice of land urbanization mode and improving environmental policies.Based on the actual development of land urbanization and regional carbon emission efficiency in China, this paper puts forward the U-shaped research hypothesis of the impact of land urbanization on regional carbon emission efficiency, relying on the urban environmental change theory,EKC theory and dynamic optimization analysis method.A spatial adaptive semi parametric model is established to analyze the impact of land urbanization on regional carbon emission efficiency. The results show that the impact of land urbanization on regional carbon emission efficiency presents a U-shaped hypothesis. From the perspective of dynamic evolution, the convergence model and threshold model are established to investigate the impact of land urbanization on the convergence of China’s regional carbon emission efficiency, and the interval effect of land urbanization development gap on the convergence of China’s regional carbon emission efficiency. This paper analyzes the spatial and temporal characteristics and dynamic changes of land urbanization and regional carbon emission efficiency in China. The results show that there is a significant gap in the level of regional land urbanization in China, and the spatial differentiation is obvious, showing a pattern of cluster distribution. There is a club convergence phenomenon in the regional carbon emission efficiency of China. There is a U-shaped trend between land urbanization and regional carbon emission efficiency, and the inflection point is around 41%.When the land urbanization rate is low,the distribution of regional carbon emission efficiency is divergent. When the land urbanization rate is high, the distribution of regional carbon emission efficiency is more concentrated.Based on the theory of urban environmental change and EKC,this paper puts forward a U-shaped hypothesis of the impact of land urbanization on regional carbon emission efficiency.Using the dynamic optimization analysis method, this paper constructs the theoretical model of green land urbanization. It analyzes the impact mechanism of land urbanization on regional carbon emission efficiency in the process of rapid economic development from the perspective of industrial structure change caused by land use structure. In the early stage of extensive economic development with low rate of land urbanization, local governments sell industrial land at low prices to attract investment. This makes the land use efficiency low and regional carbon emission efficiency low.In the period of intensive economic development with high land urbanization rate, land policy and industrial policy incline to service industry and high-tech industry. This makes land use efficiency high and regional carbon emission efficiency improved.Based on the theoretical analysis,a spatial adaptive semi parametric model is established to analyze the impact of land urbanization on the regional carbon emission efficiency in China. The regression results show that there is a U-shaped curve relationship between land urbanization rate and regional carbon emission efficiency at the national level. The eastern region is located on the right side of the U-shaped curve, and the central and western region is located on the left side of the U-shaped curve, which verifies the hypothesis that the impact of land urbanization on regional carbon emission efficiency presents a U-shaped.From the perspective of dynamic evolution, the convergence model and threshold model are established to investigate the impact of land urbanization on the convergence of China’s regional carbon emission efficiency, and the interval effect of land urbanization development gap on the convergence of China’s regional carbon emission efficiency. The empirical results of convergence model show that there is absolute β convergence in China’s regional carbon emission efficiency from 2002 to 2020,and the improvement of land urbanization level in each region can promote the convergence of regional carbon emission efficiency. The empirical results of threshold model show that the convergence characteristics of regional carbon emission efficiency are significant and the convergence speed is fast when the land urbanization level gap is less than 5.01%.When the difference of land urbanization level between regions is greater than 5.01%,the convergence behavior of regional carbon emission efficiency is weakened.Although it also shows a significant β convergence, the convergence speed becomes slow.According to this, this paper puts forward the countermeasures and suggestions, and the feasibility of further improving the environmental regulation policy, implementing the construction land reduction policy and the land index cross regional transaction policy.
