Since the reform and opening up,China’s growing economy has also brought great pressure to the carrying capacity of resources and the environment.Under the new normal economy,China has actively taken relevant measures to deal with global warming, demonstrating its responsibility as a major country in carbon emission reduction. As a new driving force to promote the current economic and social development, the development of e-commerce is in a relatively important position in the economic field, and the development of e-commerce can promote the transformation of economic and social development, and also plays a vital role in carbon emission reduction. Therefore, this paper analyzes the impact of regional e-commerce development on carbon dioxide emissions and its impact mechanism, which is of great significance for the development of e-commerce and the alleviation of carbon emission reduction pressure. This paper first sorts out the relevant literature of e-commerce and carbon dioxide emissions at home and abroad, and divides the impact of e-commerce development on carbon dioxide emissions into two aspects: direct and indirect impact.Secondly, this paper takes the data of 30 provinces in China from 2013 to 2019 as the sample for research, measures the development level of e-commerce by constructing an evaluation index system, takes the total amount of carbon dioxide emissions as an indicator to measure the degree of carbon dioxide emissions, and analyzes the statistical measurement results and current status. Finally, the impact of e-commerce development on CO2 emissions is studied from an empirical point of view, the STURBANAT model is used to explore the direct impact of e-commerce development on CO2 emissions, the panel threshold model is used to explore the nonlinear impact of e-commerce development on CO2 emissions, the structural equation model is used to explore the indirect impact of e-commerce development on CO2 emissions, and the heterogeneity of e-commerce development affecting CO2 emissions in different regions is analyzed. The empirical results show that the development of regional e-commerce in China has a significant negative impact on carbon dioxide emissions, and the higher the level of Internet infrastructure, the greater the negative impact of e-commerce development on carbon dioxide emissions.Further research mechanisms show that the development of e-commerce not only has a positive impact on carbon dioxide emissions, but also has a negative impact, among which the development of e-commerce will increase carbon dioxide emissions by promoting economic development, increasing energy consumption and expanding international trade, but the development of e-commerce can also reduce carbon dioxide emissions by promoting technological progress and promoting industrial structure upgrading. The analysis of heterogeneous effects in different regions showed that the eastern region had the greatest inhibitory effect on CO2 emissions, and the western region had the least inhibitory effect on CO2 emissions.Based on the above conclusions, this paper also puts forward targeted policy suggestions on how to promote the sustainable development of e-commerce and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
