Since the 19 th National Congress, the introduction of the "Blue Sky War" and the "Two Mountains" theory has enhanced our ecological well-being,greatly improved our ecological situation, and pushed us to embark on a greener and more harmonious path. However, due to the shortage of land resources, there are still certain gaps in the development of various places, which limit the sustainable and healthy development of our economy, society and environment. In recent years,China has experienced rapid industrial development and urbanization, which have greatly enhanced the country’s economy and brought significant social well-being.However,China’s economic growth has been limited by previous activities such as rough farming, mining and construction, and it has become increasingly important to improve land use and optimize the land use structure for economical and intensive land use. With the improvement of people’s quality of life in the new era, there is a great contradiction with the uncoordinated and unbalanced development of land supply. The "double transformation" of "green water and green mountain" and "golden mountain" has become more necessary and urgent. In this paper,we take 44 cities in Hunan,Hubei,Jiangxi and Anhui provinces in the middle reaches of Yangtze River as the study area from the perspective of urban "land-intensive utilization-ecological welfare" complex system, and use entropy weight method and stochastic frontier analysis(SFA)to construct land-intensive utilization and ecological welfare performance measurement On the basis of these models,a coupling coordination model was established to measure the coupling coordination between urban land intensive use and ecological welfare performance in 44 cities in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, reveal the spatial and temporal evolution of the coupling relationship, analyze its characteristics, and conduct spatial autocorrelation analysis,so as to explore policy implications in the context of economic development. The results show that:(1)The four provinces of the middle reaches of the Yangtze River have seen a marked divergence in the temporal and spatial evolution of land intensive use.In terms of time, the urban land intensive use in these provinces has been steadily increasing, with a rapid growth rate from 2011 to 2013,reaching 15.95% in the process.Since 2016,the saturation of land intensive use has been achieved, and the four provinces of the Yangtze River’s mid-western reaches have seen a steady equilibrium in urban land intensive use for a considerable time. However,in 2019,the growth rate showed a rebound. The four provinces of the middle reaches of the Yangtze Rivers demonstrate a clustered feature of land intensive use, with the provincial capital cities at its center. This is further evidenced by the northeast side of the research area, which displays an overall movement from southeast to northwest in terms of space.(2)The four provinces in the Yangtze River’s middle reaches have seen a steady rise in their ecological welfare performance over time.Hunan,Anhui,Hubei and Jiangxi are the highest-ranking provinces, with Hunan’s being notably higher than the other three, while Anhui and Hubei have comparable levels, and Jiangxi’s is much lower than the rest. The four provinces in the Yangtze River’s middle reaches, with Wuhan,Changsha,Nanchang, and Hefei as their provincial capitals, demonstrate an adistribution pattern of high ecological welfare on both sides and low in the middle, forming a stable "Four-Core" growth pole distribution pattern of high ecological welfare performance on a spatial scale.Anhui Province’s ecological welfare performance is all in the middle to high level, while Hunan and Hubei provinces generally have middle to high ecological welfare performance levels, and Jiangxi’s ecological welfare performance is generally in the middle to low level.(3)An overall upward trend in the correlation between urban land intensive use and ecological welfare performance in the four provinces of the middle reaches of the Yangtze River is evident throughout the research period, and the trend of regional balanced development is becoming increasingly noteworthy. The coupling degree value is mostly in the range of 0.95 to 1,which is close to 1,it indicate a high-level coupling and a strong correlation and interaction between urban land intensive use and ecological welfare performance, and a clear coupling relationship exists. The four provinces of the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, between 2011 and 2020,exhibited a trend of increasing coordination between urban land use efficiency and ecological welfare performance,as the mutual influence and interaction between the two increased. This was evidenced by the higher degree of coupling coordination. The global Moran’s index’s Moran’s I values are affirmative, passing the 5% significance test, implying a noteworthy positive spatial autocorrelation of the coupling coordination degree.Moran’s scatter plot reveals the highest concentration of points in the initial and third quadrants, implying a positive spatial correlation between the amount of urban land intensive use and ecological well-being in the four provinces of the Yangtze River’s mid-section.In order to effectively promote the sustainable development of the "intensive land use-ecological green development" system,it is necessary to enhance regional synergy, give full play to the radiating role of the core cities, improve relevant policies, and implement scientific planning and control measures to realize the development and use of land resources from a crude to an intensive approach,as well as to implement the concept of "intensive land use-ecological green development" and improve laws and regulations to ensure the efficient and intensive use of land resources and the optimization of the ecological environment in parallel,so as to achieve green and sustainable social goals.
