Foster’s Eco-Marxist Thought And Implications For Ecocriticism

With the development of human society,the problems of resource depletion,environmental pollution and climate change are becoming more and more serious.The earth’s ecology has suffered great damage and has actually posed a serious threat to the survival of human beings.People are aware of the seriousness of the ecological crisis.How to solve this crisis and build a harmonious future between man and nature has become a hot topic of concern.Ecocriticism,which takes literary texts as the main object of criticism,has also emerged in the development of green thoughts.After more than 30 years of development,many schools of ecocriticism have emerged,such as Deep Ecology,Ecopoetics,Ecofeminist criticism and Post-colonial Ecocriticism.However,its development dilemma has gradually emerged.Many scholars have expounded the development dilemma of ecocriticism from various perspectives such as theoretical construction,criticism object and dialogue between China and the West.This paper focuses on two dilemmas in the development of ecocriticism : the relationship between man and nature and the gap between cultural theory and ecological material reality.Based on the ecological criticism of the relationship between man and nature and the reality of concern,the idea of ecological Marxism into the author ’s vision.Ecological Marxism belongs to the red and green camp in the green trend of thought.Based on the classical theory of Marxism,it holds that the capitalist system is the root of the ecological crisis,and puts forward the analysis and way out of the existing ecological crisis.Foster examined the formation of Marx ’s materialist conception of history in depth,excavated the view of nature behind it,reconstructed the dialectics of nature that unifies nature and society from the philosophical level,and bridged the differences between Engels and Marx on this issue in Western Marxist views.At the theoretical level,in the further investigation of Marx’s materialist view of nature on the criticism of capitalism,the theory of ’ metabolic fracture ’was excavated,and the reason why the capitalist system caused this ’ fracture ’ was discussed.On the practical level,it criticizes the solution of capitalism to the ecological crisis,points out the anti-ecological nature of the capitalist system,and shows that the ecological revolution combined with socialism is the only way out.Starting from the background and theoretical basis of Foster ’s ecological Marxist thought,this paper elaborates on the construction of natural dialectics as its ideological basis,further explains its two important topics of metabolic fracture theory and capitalist system ecological criticism,and finally points out its theoretical thinking on the relationship between man and nature,as well as its enlightenment to the existing dilemma of ecological criticism in the dimension of realistic care.
