A Study Of Zhang Zhongjing’s Thought On Lung Treatment

Objective: Through sorting out the relevant articles in Zhang Zhongjing’s Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases and Synopsis of the Golden Chamber,analyzing and summarizing the basic ideas of Zhang Zhongjing’s treating lung diseases and other organs from the perspective of lung,it can not only systematize Zhang Zhongjing’s views on treating lung,but also construct Zhang Zhongjing’s system of treating diseases from the perspective of lung,and provide theoretical basis for the clinical practice of Chinese medicine.Methods: Using the methods of literature research and theoretical research,analyzing the articles in the Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases and Synopsis of the Golden Chamber that deal with the treatment of illnesses from the perspective of the lung,and condensing Zhang Zhongjing’s views on the treatment of the lung,including the common methods of treating the lung,the medicines used to treat the lung,and the characteristics compatibility of medicine.Results:1.Zhang Zhongjing uses the methods of dispersing lung,purging lung,clearing away lung heat,warming lung and invigorating lung to restore and regulate the dispersing and descending functions of the lung and to treat the symptoms of the lung organs.For example,he uses the methods of dispersing lung to relief exterior syndrome,dispersing lung to expel dampness,dispersing lung to resolve fluid retention,dispersing lung to promote metabolism of fluid,dispersing lung to relieve asthma and dispersing lung to abate jaundice to treat symptoms such as Taiyang diseases,postpartum stroke,damp disease,yellowish sweating,etc.He uses the methods of purging lung to relieve asthma,purging lung to resolve fluid retention and purging lung to dredge intestines to treat pulmonary abscess,thoracic fluid retention and blocked-up chest syndrome.Clearing away lung heat and clearing away heat to resolve phlegm for resolving carbuncle to treat wind edema,pulmonary abscess,cough and asthma,and small knotted chest.Warming lung to resolve fluid retention and warming lung to restore lung-qi to treat symptoms such as thoracic retention of fluid and consumptive lung disease.Replenishing qi to dredge yang and consolidate superficies,and replenishing qi and nourishing yin to moisten lung to treat symptoms such as exterior deficiency syndrome of Taiyang,consumptive lung disease,and relapse after exhaustion.2.Zhang Zhongjing applies recuperative medical care the lung-qi to treat other viscera.For heart disease syndrome,nourishing heart-yin and lung-yin to quiet spirit and warming heart-yang and lung-yang to disperse obstruction.For liver disease,dispersing lung-qi to relief exterior syndrome and promote qi flow to relieve depression and resolve phlegm.For spleen and stomach disease,recuperative medical care the lung-qi and regulating yingqi and weiqi to invigorate spleen and stomach.For kidney disease,nourishing kidney-yin and lung-yin to moisten dryness to clear away heat;dispersing weiqi to help kidney to transform qi to drain water.For large intestinal disease,dispersing and descending lung-qi to help large intestine to lower qi to remove fullness and expelling heat to stop diarrhea.For bladder disease,dispersing lung-qi to open muscular interstices to promote urination,descending lung-qi to clear away heat to free stranguria.Conclusions:1.Treating the lung is a matter of treating lung-qi.The qi of the viscera is the material basis for the activities of the viscera.When qi gathers,all things come into being.The dispersal and descent of lung-qi is the most basic form of achieving the physiological function of the lungs,therefore Zhang Zhongjing focuses on regulating lung-qi when treating the lungs to cure diseases.2.Zhang Zhongjing’s treatment of the lung is based on the choice of medicine and the compatibility of medicine.It is often used to ascend and disperse lung-qi with Ephedra herb,to purify and descend lung-qi with Bitter Apricot Seed and Officinal Magnolia Bark,to converge lung-qi with Schisandra Chinensis Fructus,to purge lung-qi with Semen Lepidii,to clear the heat from lung with Gypsum Fibrosum,to removal of turbid pathogen with Dried Ginger,Herba Asari and Pinellia Tuber,to removal of sputum with Allii Macrostemonis Bulbus and Fructus Trichosanthis,to tonify the lung-qi with Radix Ginseng and Radix Astragali,to tonify the lung-yin with Dwarf Lilyturf Tuber and Lily Bulb.Zhang Zhongjing is also very particular about the compatibility of medicine for treating the lung.For example,pungent openings and bitter descents smooth lung-qi with ephedra and almonds;pungent dispersal and sour astringent astringent lung-qi with dried ginger,herba asari and schisandra chinensis fructus;bitter drains and sweet eases tpulmonary edema with semen lepidii and jujube;cold and warmth are used to clear the interior and relief exterior syndrome with gypsum and ephedra;moistening and drying are used to nourish lung-yin with dwarf lilyturf tuber and pinellia tuber;pungent and warm passes warm lung-yang with dried ginger and herba asari.By collating the prescriptions related to Zhang Zhongjing’s treatment of the lung,the characteristics of his thinking on the treatment of the lung can be condensed,and his commonly used drugs and their combination rules can be summarized.
