Objective:The purpose of this study was to investigate the current status of work stress, job burnout, and presenteeism among operating room nurses. This study analyzed the effect of general demographic factors on work stress, job burnout, and presenteeism. The relationship between work stress, job burnout, and presenteeism among OR nurses was established, and a structural equation model was built to correlate job burnout in work stress with presenteeism. Methods:In this cross-sectional study,a convenient sampling method was adopted, and 600 registered operating room nurses from 16 general hospitals in 5 cities in Jiangsu Province from March to September 2022 were selected.By using the Self-designed General Information Questionnaire,Challenge Hindrance Work Stress Scale(C-HSS),MBI-HSS,Stanford Presenteeism Scale(SPS-6),the general demographic information, work stress, job burnout, and presenteeism of operating room nurses were investigated.Statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS 26.0 and AMOS 24.0 software.Pearson correlation analysis, multiple linear regression analysis, and a structural equation model were established to verify the mediating role of job burnout in work stress and presenteeism among operating room nurses.Results:(1)The challenging stress score of operating room nurses is(21.02±4.76)points,with an average item score of(3.51 ±0.79)points.The obstructive stress score(12.75±4.33),with an average item score of(2.55±0.87).The total score of job burnout among operating room nurses is(48.90±24.86),with an average item score of(2.22±1.13).The average scores of each dimension are ranked from high to low as emotional exhaustion dimension(2.52±1.31),personal achievement dimension(2.31 ± 1.30),and depersonalization dimension(1.58±0.94).The presenteeism score of operating room nurses is(16.82±5.25)points,with an average score of(2.80±0.87)points.(2)Univariate analysis showed statistically significant differences(P<0.05)in the scores of challenging stress among OR nurses concerning age, hours worked per week, number of children, and health status.Besides, statistically significant differences(P<0.05)were also found in the scores of obstructive stress among operating room nurses concerning age, education, number of hours worked per week, and health status. There were statistically significant differences in the scores of presenteeism among operating room nurses in terms of age, weekly working hours, monthly night shift frequency, and health status(P<0.05).(3)Pearson correlation analysis showed that challenging stress of OR nurses was significantly negatively correlated with presenteeism(r=-0.468,P<0.01),hindering stress of OR nurses was significantly positively correlated with presenteeism(r=0.464,P<0.01),and job burnout of OR nurses was significantly positively correlated with presenteeism(r=0.528,P<0.01).(4)Multiple linear regression analysis showed that health status, challenging stress, obstructive stress, and job burnout had an impact on presenteeism among operating room nurses(P<0.01),which could explain 34.0%of the total variance in presenteeism.(5)Structural equation modeling revealed that job burnout partially mediated the effect of challenging stress and hindering stress on presenteeism among OR nurses, with the mediating effect accounting for 38.18%and 41.64%of the total effect,respectively.Conclusion:(1)Operating room nurses’ challenge-hindrance work stress scores were at a moderate level, and job burnout including all dimensions scores as well as hidden absence scores was at a high level.(2)In general demographic information, age, working hours per week, number of children, and health status had a certain impact on challenging stress among operating room nurses.Age,education, working hours per week, and health status had a certain impact on hindering stress among operating room nurses.Age,hospital grade, working hours, frequency of night shifts per month, and health status had a certain impact on job burnout among operating room nurses.Age,weekly working hours, monthly night shift frequency, and health status had a certain impact on presenteeism among operating room nurses.(3)There was a significant correlation between work stress, job burnout, and presenteeism among OR nurses. The more challenging stress the OR nurses received, the lower the job burnout and the lower the presenteeism.Conversely, the more obstructive pressure the OR nurses received, the higher the job burnout and the higher the presenteeism.(4)According to the fitting results of the structural equation model, job burnout among OR nurses partially mediated the relationship between challenging-hindering work stress and presenteeism, suggesting that managers should give OR nurses appropriate stress stimuli to avoid job burnout, which could reduce their level of presenteeism.
