Objective:This study investigated the status of Internet addiction among middle school students in C City, explored the influencing factors of Internet addiction among middle school students in C City from the perspectives of sociodemographic characteristics, behavioral lifestyle, injury related behaviors, and psychological factors, and further analyzed the importance of influencing factors of Internet addiction,Based on this, the mediating role of depression symptoms between campus bullying and Internet addiction,as well as the moderating role of gender in the mediating model,is explored from the perspective of schools and based on the generalized tension theory. On this basis,a comprehensive prevention and control strategy is proposed to provide scientific evidence for the development of Internet addiction among middle school students in C City. Methods:The data from this study comes from the monitoring and intervention project on common diseases and health-promoting factors among students in C City(2021).The subjects of the study included 11 middle and high school students from 3 districts/cities in C City.Questionnaire survey method was used to investigate the research objects. The questionnaire contains personal information, diet, exercise behavior, injury related behavior, and internet usage.Used IBM SPSS 24.0 and R 4.1.0 for data processing and statistical evaluation.Results:1.The prevalence of Internet addiction was 9.5%.2.School type, whether living with parents, whether living in school, frequency of drinking sugary drinks, frequency of moderate and high intensity exercise, frequency of watching TV,whether suffering from campus bullying in the past 30 days, whether being beaten and scolded by parents in the past 30 days, depressive symptoms, and whether fighting with people in the past 12 months are the influencing factors of IAD(P<0.05).Junior high school students are 1.536 times more likely to have Internet addiction than senior high school students(95%CI:1.101-2.141);those who did not live with their parents were 1.462 times more likely to have Internet addiction than those who lived with their parents(95%CI:1.058-2.020);the probability of Internet addiction among residents was 1.805 times that of non residents(95%CI:1.308-2.491);those who drink sugary drinks every day are 4.088 times more likely to suffer from internet addiction than those who do not drink sugary drinks every day(95%CI:2.816-5.935);those with 1-3 times/day and≥4 days/week of moderate and high intensity exercise were 0.656 times(95%CI:0.434-0.993)and 0.488 times(95%CI:0.340-0.700)more likely to develop Internet addiction than those without moderate and high intensity exercise, those who watched TV for more than 2 hours/day were 1.548 times more likely to have Internet addiction than those who watched TV for less than 2 hours/day(95%CI:1.041-2.302);those who suffered from campus bullying in the past 30 days were 1.573 times more likely to have Internet addiction than those who did not(95%CI:1.085-2.282);those who had been beaten and scolded by their parents in the past 30 days were 1.798 times more likely to have Internet addiction than those who had not been beaten and scolded by their parents(95%CI:1.238-2.611);in the past 12 months, those who fight with others are 1.641 times more likely to have Internet addiction than those who do not fight with others(95%CI:1.030-2.615);people with depression were 4.075 times more likely to have internet addiction than those without depression(95%CI:2.965-5.600).3.By building a random forest model, the influential factors of the Internet addiction of the respondents were ranked in descending order:depressive symptoms, the frequency of moderate and high intensity exercise, the frequency of drinking sugary drinks, whether they lived with their parents, whether they suffered from campus bullying in the past 30 days, whether they were scolded by their parents in the past 30 days, school type,TV watching time, whether they lived in school, and whether they fought with others in the past 12 months.4.The results of intermediary effect analysis showed that depressive symptoms played a part of intermediary role between campus bullying and Internet addiction. The indirect effect of campus bullying on Internet addiction is significant, and the confidence interval(0.107-0.172)does not include 0.The results of moderating effect show that the interaction between campus bullying and gender plays a moderating role in the impact of Internet addiction(β=0.267,P<0.001)。School bullying of male students can significantly and positively predict internet addiction(β=0.098,t=2.042,P<0.05).School bullying in the female group can also significantly and positively predict Internet addiction, and its predictive effect is greater than that in the male group(β=0.365,t=6.281,P<0.05)。Conclusions:1.The detection rate of Internet addiction among middle school students in C City is high, and the problem of Internet addiction among middle school students needs to be improved urgently.2.The type of school, whether they live with their parents, whether they live on campus, whether they drink sugary drinks every day, frequency of moderate to high intensity exercise, length of TV watching, whether they have been scolded by parents, whether they have been bullied on campus, whether they have fought with others, and depressive symptoms are independent influencing factors of internet addiction.Identifying and intervening in these factors is conducive to early detection of the risk of internet addiction among middle school students and adopting comprehensive prevention strategies.3.According to the random forest model, the importance of the influencing factors of Internet addiction of middle school students in C is in the following order:depressive symptoms, frequency of moderate and high intensity exercise, whether they drink sugary drinks every day, whether they live with their parents, whether they are bullied on campus, whether they have been beaten and scolded by their parents, school type, length of TV watching, whether they live in school, and whether they fight with others.4.Depression symptoms play a mediating role between school bullying and Internet addiction among middle school students.Gender regulates the relationship between school bullying and Internet addiction among middle school students. With the aggravation of school bullying, girls are more likely to experience Internet addiction symptoms than boys.
