Objective: Apply the OBE concept to the ideological and political teaching of geriatric nursing courses,and explore the influence of ideological and political teaching of "Geriatric Nursing" courses on the attitude of nursing students,the willingness of elderly care,humanistic care ability and learning effect.Understand the experience of undergraduate nursing students and teachers of geriatric nursing professional courses in the ideological and political teaching of geriatric nursing,and provide reference for the continuous improvement of ideological and political teaching in geriatric nursing courses.Methods: A mixed-methods research design was employed.This quantitative study aimed to investigate the impact of ideological and political education on 332 undergraduate nursing students majoring in geriatric nursing from a medical university in Xinjiang.Before and after the "Geriatric Nursing" course,the student’s willingness to provide care for the elderly,attitudes towards the elderly,and humanistic care abilities were measured using a general survey form,elderly attitude scale,and humanistic care ability scale.Additionally,a learning effectiveness questionnaire survey was conducted after the teaching,and compare the academic performance of the class of 2019 and the class of 2018 geriatric nursing In the qualitative study,a purposeful sampling method was used to select 9 geriatric nursing course teachers and 15 nursing students who completed the course.These participants were interviewed,and the data were organized,coded,and distilled into themes using the Colaizzi seven-step analysis method.By combining both quantitative and qualitative approaches,this study provides a comprehensive understanding of the impact of ideological and political education on nursing students’ attitudes towards the elderly and their humanistic care abilities,as well as the experiences of both teachers and students in the "Geriatric Nursing" course.Results:(1)Quantitative research results:(1)Before the teaching,the total score of the nursing students’ attitude towards the elderly was 114.72±14.59,with a bias dimension score of 64.76±14.13 and an appreciation dimension score of 49.96±9.32.After the teaching,the total score of the nursing students’ attitude towards the elderly was124.40±14.17,with a bias dimension score of 69.88±13.37 and an appreciation dimension score of 54.52±8.82.The results showed that there were statistically significant differences in the total score and various dimension scores of the nursing students’ attitudes toward the elderly before and after the teaching(P<0.05).(2)Before the teaching,the total score of the nursing students’ humanistic care ability was 181.41±15.80,with a cognitive dimension score of 70.57±6.71,a courage dimension score of 57.45±8.51,and a patience dimension score of 53.38±5.30.After the teaching,the total score of the nursing students’ humanistic care ability was 194.32±15.17,with a cognitive dimension score of 75.61±6.51,a courage dimension score of 61.73±8.08,and a patience dimension score of 56.99±4.98.The results showed that there were statistically significant differences in the total score and various dimension scores of the nursing students’ humanistic care ability before and after the teaching(P < 0.05).(3)Before the teaching,42.4% of the nursing students had the willingness to engage in elderly care,while after the teaching,61.6% of the nursing students had the willingness to engage in elderly care.The results showed that there were statistically significant differences in the nursing students’ willingness to engage in elderly care before and after the teaching(P<0.05).(4)The attainment of expected learning outcomes by nursing students ranged from 90.6% to 94.6%.(5)The formative evaluation score of the2019 nursing student "Geriatric Nursing" course was 90.40±4.93,the final theoretical examination score was 75.79±9.75,the overall evaluation score was 83.09±6.14,the 2018 grade formative evaluation score was 82.44±6.38,the final theoretical score was 74.91±9.16,and the total evaluation score was 78.67±6.40,the results showed that the difference between the formative assessment score and the overall assessment score of the two grades was statistically significant(P<0.05).(2)Qualitative research results:(1)Three themes were summarized from the nursing students’ experience of ideological and political education in elderly nursing: establishing correct values,enhancing professional qualities and recognition,and expectations for the course’s ideological and political education.(2)Three themes were identified from the elderly nursing course teachers’ real experience of implementing ideological and political teaching in the course: positive feedback on the ideological and political teaching,teaching pressure and lack of ability in education,and expectations for the course’s ideological and political education.Conclusion: Incorporating ideological and political education into the "Geriatric Nursing" course is beneficial for improving nursing students’ attitudes towards the elderly,their willingness to provide elderly care,humanistic care abilities,and learning effectiveness.It also helps students establish correct values and improve their professional skills and identity.Professional course teachers have a dual teaching experience in course ideological and political education,which not only improves teaching effectiveness but also increases their teaching pressure.
