In the mid-17th century,a form of literature called light opera was born in Italy.Light opera is also known as"interesting opera" or " tiny opera".Due to the humorous and relaxed style of this kind of literature,it is easy to be accepted by the audience.This characteristic further makes the opera spread across the European countries.In the middle of the 19th century,light opera were spread to Vienna,therefore many composers who were famous for producing of light opera were appeared in this country.One of the most famous composers was Franz Lehar.His magnum opus,"the merry widow",was a grand milestone of the Viennese light opera history.This light opera is composed by three acts,in which the life style of European high society in early 20th century were shown to audience.The story was based on the Paris high society and the main content is about the love story of Hannah,who was a beautiful widow with huge amount of property.After its premiere at the Vienna grand theatre in 1905,"the merry widow" received unprecedented popularity,and eventually lower the curtain after 600 perfect performances.Thus,this work has significant importance in the history of Viennese light opera.The song of Vilja lied,the aria chosen by the author,is a famous passage of the heroine Hannah in "the merry widow".The work is a fully displayed characteristics of Lehar including humorous performances,beautiful melodic lines and intriguing plots.The most important task of performing this passage is to read those German lyrics in an extremely accurate pronunciation.Then,various speed and strength ought to be used in singing and performance according to different plot situation,so that the emotion the work can be fully delivered to audience.The purpose of this article is to study ’The song of Vilja lied’ in detail.In the first part,the life experience of the composer together with the generation and development of Viennese light opera is introduced.Besides,a brief description of ’a merry widow’ is given in this part as well.Then in the second part,some detailed analysis of ’The song of Vilja lied’ is illustrated,which including music itself,control of language and requirement of emotion accompaniment music.In the final part of the article,three different versions of ’The song of Vilja lied’ were analyzed.And the outcome of the analysis is further extended into author’s practice of singing this passage.Hoping this article provided others vocal music learner with some critical reference,so that they can grasp opera singing methods in various perspectives.
