The source text of this project is from the sub-project translation practice project,"Archives of the South China Sea Issue Stored in Britain:Arrangement and Translation(20th Century)",of "Archives of the South China Sea Issue Stored in Britain:Arrangement and Research",Major Project on Philosophy and Social Sciences of the Ministry of Education(Grant NO.:21JZD035).The author’s supervisor,Professor Liang Yuan,is responsible for this sub-project,and the author is in charge of translating one part of the documents, entitled Loss of RAF Shackleton(No.1959-FO-371-141395).The main content is a file of documents about a series of investigations into the crash of a RAF aircraft on Taiping Island,in the form of telegraphic correspondence, focusing on the history of the dispute over the island’s sovereignty, the attitudes, testimonies of people related in the incident in Chinese Hong Kong,Chinese Taiwan,Britain,Malaysia,Singapore and the Philippines, specifically exploring the details of the crash, the whereabouts of several Fishing boats associated with the crashed aircraft, etc. The text is historical and specialized with much telegraphic and diplomatic jargon. The language is plain and straightforward, while there are many long, logical sentences.Given that the purpose of the source text is mainly for information transfer, the author intends to adopt foreignizing strategy and flexible translation techniques, such as addition, conversion, negation, division, omission, etc.Besides, the author summarizes and analyzes the whole process of English-Chinese translation of the documents, with a view to accumulating experience for future translation practice and providing a reference for translators of similar texts. This translation report consists of four parts:the first part is the description of the translation task, which introduces the background, significance of the task, and the details of the source text;the second part is the description of the translation process, which explains the preparation work before translation, the key points and difficulties during translation,as well as the proofreading after translation;the third chapter is the case studies,in which the translator selects appropriate translation strategies and translation techniques in relation to the text, and the fourth chapter summarizes the experience and shortcomings of the translation practice.
