Cities was born because of the canal, and the canal was dug because of cities. With the continuous excavation and evolution of the Grand Canal, the natural ecological and social environment of the settlements has undergone earth-shaking changes, and the formation and development of urban—village—settlements along the line has also been profoundly affected. In turn, the function of the Grand Canal will also be With the construction and development of the entire social economy and settlements,it has undergone a certain degree of evolution. However, under the background of urbanization and industrialization, these settlements along the canal are gradually decreasing, and the old pattern is in conflict with the development of the new era.In addition, the Grand Canal is not only a cultural route, but a cultural ecological network composed of old and new routes and main branch routes. At present, there are few studies on the settlements along the Grand Canal and its branch routes.Due to the phenomenon of "fragmentation" across regions, the cultural ecological network of the Grand Canal needs to be integrated and constructed urgently. The Jiangnan Canal is the most active and busiest section along the entire Grand Canal, and its surrounding branches are densely covered with water networks. The traditional linear concept of heritage protection of the "Grand Canal Cultural Belt" should be transformed into a multi-dimensional perspective of the "Grand Canal Cultural Heritage Network".Together, they form a cultural heritage network system of the Grand Canal, which is intertwined with artificial and natural water networks and reflects the prosperity of Jiangnan culture. In addition, the settlements along the Jiangnan Canal,as the community with the highest distribution density of settlements along the entire Grand Canal, not only carry a unique multicultural heritage, but also form a rich and diverse canal landscape ecological style. This article takes the Jiangnan Canal and the settlements along the canal as the research object.Under the guidance of cultural ecology, this paper sorts out the cultural and ecological resources of the Jiangnan Canal and the settlements along the canal. From the four dimensions of culture, ecology, economy and society, the canal and the settlements along the transportation are combined The spatial and temporal evolution, interactive development, and resource system between them have been systematically studied. The study draws on the advantages of multi-dimensional data analysis,multi-dimensional,fast and sharing, and forms a multi-scale and multi-data source database covering the Jiangnan Canal and settlements along the line by means of GIS,RS,network data, literature, site surveys, interviews and other multi-source methods. And these acquired statistical data are stored in static information and dynamic time-space visualization analysis, transforming the complex raw data into a user-friendly visual language, and constructing a visualization platform for the"Jiangnan Canal Cultural Ecological Map".So as to realize the transformation from "hidden"to "obvious",from "quiet" to "live",from "scattered" to "integrated",and from "offline" to"online",integrating the Jiangnan Canal and the settlement debris along the transportation to promote the digital protection and dissemination of cultural and ecological heritage. The article consists of six chapters,of which:the first chapter is the introduction;the second chapter is the research review, which discusses the Jiangnan Canal, cultural ecology,multi-dimensional data analysis, visualization and constructs a multi-dimensional data analysis guide. The Chapter 3 is the macro-scale:the four-dimensional resource system of the Jiangnan Canal and the settlements along the transportation from the perspective of cultural ecology.Focusing on the Jiangnan Canal and the settlements along the canal,a joint analysis of the cultural and ecological resources of the canal and the elements of the settlement pattern along the canal is carried out from the macro scale, from "scattered" to "integrated",from "hidden" to"explicit" to explore the Jiangnan Canal and its coastal transportation. The development law of the four dimensions of the settlement’s cultural ecological system;the fourth chapter is the micro-scale:the resource system of the four dimensions of the settlement along the transportation from the perspective of cultural ecology-taking Xincheng Town as an example.Taking Xincheng Town as an example,we sort out the cultural ecosystem of the settlements and towns along the transportation from the micro level, and systematically reorganize the scattered and fragmented cultural resources of the settlements along the transportation,so as to form a complete and unified cultural ecosystem of the settlements along the transportation.Chapter 5 is the research of map visualization based on cultural ecology.Based on the constructed cultural ecosystem, synthesizing the resource systems in Chapters 3 and 4,combining with multi-dimensional data analysis and visualization technologies, through data acquisition, user and demand research, functional design and information architecture, the visualization of the "cultural ecological map" is researched and From the macro and micro scales,it visualizes the cultural ecological system of the Jiangnan Canal and the settlements along the Yangtze River. The sixth chapter is the summary and prospect.
