On The Translation Strategies In Translating Foregrounded Language

Novel translation is a significant part of literary translation and the translator inevitably faces the question of how to deliver the style.Since foregrounded linguistic features,often produced by the author with studied care,contribute significantly to the building of the style of a specific literary text,translators must attach importance to their translation.This report explores translation strategies and methods on foregrounded language from the source text that comes from the preface and the first two chapters of The Last Romantics.Foregrounding includes deviation,repetition and parallelism.This report chooses,according to the characteristics of the source text,three types of deviation(grammatical deviation,semantic deviation and graphological deviation),repetition and parallelism to expound the translation of foregrounded language.It is concluded that translators should retain the foregrounded linguistic features as much as possible and that they must analyze the produced stylistic effects and semantic functions before translating the sentences.Literal translation and sometimes together with compensation or division can be used to translate sentences with grammatical deviation.For graphological deviation,using the original font or copying the original word-setting is a way to retain the deviation demonstrated by a prominent font or word-setting.For simile,metaphor and pun,which are three representative forms of semantic deviation in this report,literal translation can be used to keep the original simile or metaphor,sometimes in combination with compensatory means to help deliver the sense;and in translating puns,literal translation in combination with coinage or compensation may be considered suitable methods to retain the figure of speech or compensate for the lost sense.Finally,for repetition,literal translation is often used,sometimes together with compensatory means;and literal translation and sometimes in combination with repetition or division are applied to translate sentences with parallelism.As stated above,literal translation is a major strategy used by the author of the present report to translate foregrounded language.Division,compensation,coinage and repetition are also employed,according to the case in question,to assist the translation.
