The Research Of Wang Qi’s Xu Wen Xian Tong Kao·Jieyi Kao

Xu Wen Xian Tong Kao is a representative work of Wang Qi,a scholar of the Ming Dynasty.It is the only privately-written Dian Zhi Ti Shi Shu after the Yuan’s Ma Duanlin’s Wen Xian Tong Kao and until modern times.The Jieyi Kao records the deeds of loyal subjects,filial sons,and festival and righteous people,which affect the hearts of the world.The ancient Chinese historiographical tradition of recording the deeds of the righteous and the widespread popularity of the traditional ethical values of "loyalty,filial piety,and righteousness" since the Song and Ming dynasties,as well as the standardization of the Ming dynasty’s official system of honoring the righteous and the enthusiasm of the scholars to record the deeds of the righteous and the righteous,led to the rise of the historical trend of compiling biographies of the righteous and the righteous.Under the direct influence of the historiographical trend of the world and Zheng Qiao’s Tong zhi,Wang Qi,with the ideology of the state and the world,based on the twentyfour categories of Ma Duanlin’s Wen Xian Tong Kao,added the section Xu Wen Xian Tong Kao– Jieyi Kao,hoping to play an educative role of ethical principles.In terms of style,content,and thought,the Jieyi Kao is a compilation that combines the continuity and specificity of traditional Chinese historiography.In terms of style,Jieyi Kao reflects Wang Qi’s tendency to follow tradition and seek development: the categories are set up according to moral types and character identities,with "Zhong" as the first,covering the traditional types of "loyalty,filial piety,festival and righteousness";under the categories,the dynasties follow each other,and the biographies are the arrangement of the biographies is characterized by the detail of the present and the omission of the ancient.In terms of content,the identity of the biographer is both official and private,mostly from Jiangsu and Zhejiang;in terms of the types of moral deeds and the selection of people from different generations,it shows the characteristics of diverse inclusion,each with its own emphasis,in line with the theme of righteousness promoted and emphasized by different dynasties in the official history;the biography is highly simplified,realistic,and the narrative mode is more uniform,and the nature of the data compilation is outstanding.The Jieyi Kao not only inherits the traditional biographical writing in terms of content,but also reflects the uniqueness of the moral tendencies of each dynasty.Ideologically,the tradition of recording Jieyi in historical books,the Ming dynasty gingtai system,social thoughts and values,and historiographical trends influenced the compilation of Jieyi Kao to some extent.Overall,the compilation of the Jieyi Kao was closely linked to the development of Chinese society and historiography at the time,and was both a product of and a reflection of the social environment and historiographical trends of the time.The historical materials in Jieyi Kao are widely sourced,with the Song,Liao,Jin,and Yuan dynasties being the main sources,while the Ming dynasty section not only refers to the Ming Shilu,but also to local literary and historical materials and private writings of the Ming dynasty,which can be said to be a collection of previous research results.In the selection of historical materials,Wang Qi attaches importance to their originality and authenticity,and at the same time,he has appropriately reduced,added and adjusted words and phrases for the sake of unity of the text.The Jieyi Kao expands the scope of the Dian Zhi Ti Shi Shu,reflects the development of Jieyi deeds in different dynasties in a concentrated manner,and plays the role of teaching ethics and morality in the form of a compilation of materials,and preserves thematic historical materials on the deeds of Jieyi characters in a concentrated manner,which has multiple values in history and literature.
