This report is based on the E-C translation project of The Dynamics of News:Journalism in the 21st-Century Media Milieu(Chapter 4).Published in 2020,this academic monograph illustrates the latest changing features of news and journalism in the digital era of the 21 st century, the resultant dilemmas and the way people should cope.In Chapter 4,R.M.Perloff,the author of this monograph, cleverly combines normative perspectives of journalism studies with a multitude of contemporary examples to reveal the roles of news in the modern times, which makes the source text both scholarly and intriguing. It provides instructive advice for readers to better understand the multifaceted nature of news and journalism. The concept of explicitation is first proposed by French scholars J.P.Vinay and J.Darbelnet in 1958.It is a common technique in translation process through which the implicit meanings of the original text, caused by linguistic and cultural differences between(at least)two languages involved, are expressed explicitly so that the translation is more natural and more understandable.Since the source text of this project contains a lot of long and complex sentences, abstract words,as well as specialized topics, the technique of explicitation is applied in many cases during the translation for the purpose that the readers of translation can better understand source-text author’s intentions.Based on Klaudy’s classification of explicitation, this report analyses the application of explicitation in the translation process and its role in improving the quality of target text from three perspectives: obligatory, optional, and pragmatic explicitation. In case analysis, the translator proposes some methods including specification of logic relations, contextualiztion, reorganization of sentences, and annotation to convey the implicit message of the source text and to achieve explicitation in the translation.Hopefully this report can provide a reference for the future translation practice of academic texts.
