An E-C Translation Report Of Neural Machine Translation (Excerpts)-Guided By Newmark’s Translation Theory

The globalized economic trend highlights the importance of English for science and technology(EST)translation in the booming east-west exchange of sci-tech.The study on neural machine translation technology can lead to the higher efficiency of sci-tech translation.However,any reports on EST translation with Neural Machine Translation(NMT)as the source text have not been retrieved.In this case,guided by Newmark’s translation theory and based on the selected material-Neural Machine Translation(excerpts),this report explores the strategies and techniques of some typical source examples in terms of vocabulary,syntax and discourse.Given Newmark’s text typology and readership analysis,this report states in this translation practice,semantic translation is adopted to retain the authenticity and professionalism of original information while communicative translation is employed to obtain fluency,readability and logical clarity in the target text.With some representative source examples,the author classifies the translation difficulties and proposes relevant translation methods,drawing the following conclusion:At the lexical level,central to semantic translation,the author applies literal translation,zero translation,transliteration plus selection of word meaning to guarantee the accuracy and consistency of terms and proper nouns;At the syntactic level,abiding by communicative translation,the author adopts conversion,addition,omission,adjustment and recasting to render an intelligible translation suiting Chinese expression habits.At the textual level,guided by communicative translation,repetition,addition and logical adjustment methods are employed to secure the fluent cohesion and logical coherence of the target text that complies with its readers’ logical thinking.In view of the informative texts with diverse features in vocabulary,syntax and discourse,this report suggests translators who translate such professional EST texts should choose different but applicable strategies and techniques for better translations,thus promoting more in-depth international exchanges in the sci-tech field.
