A Report On E-C Translation Of The Ecology Of Everyday Things (Excerpts) Under The Guidance Of Text Typology

The reading demand for popular science works in China has increased in recent years,but the translation of popular science works needs more attention.Translators should pay more attention to popular science translation,improve the quality of popular science translation,and more effectively disseminate scientific knowledge to the public.Translating foreign popular science works can stimulate readers’ interest in scientific knowledge and popular science translation and may arouse readers’ awareness of our connection with nature.Based on Peter Newmark’s text typology,this report takes the E-C translation of chapters 11-13 of the popular science book The Ecology in Everyday Things as an example and uses semantic translation and communicative translation to solve the difficulties encountered in translation.This book aims to popularize the ecological knowledge of everyday things,and its overall language style is scientific and literary.According to the source text analysis,the text belongs to informative and vocative text with informative,expressive,and vocative functions.In the translation practice,the difficulties encountered by the translator mainly include: 1)lexical level: the translation of loanwords,the translation of words with contextual meaning and the translation of literary vocabulary;2)syntactical level: the translation of passive voice,the translation of long sentences and the translation of parenthetical structures;3)textual level: how to realize the cohesion and coherence of the discourse better?Based on this analysis,the writer and target readers were regarded as the centers of this study to emphasize the correctness of the text information,enhance the readability of the translation,and increase the interestingness of the language.At the lexical level,such methods and techniques as literal translation,zero translation,diction and conversion of word class were adopted.The syntactic level includes splitting,conversion of passive voice,substitution in the parenthetical structure,addition and omission.At the textual level,reference and repetition are used to achieve cohesion and coherence.The translator discovered that the text typology can guide the translation practice of popular science texts through this translation practice,analyzed the problems and difficulties encountered in the translation process,and gained some experience in the translation of popular science texts,with the goal of providing some reference for the translation practice of similar texts in the future.
