With the promotion of the new curriculum reform,the agency of high school English teachers has become increasingly important in the field of education.The aim of this study is to explore the factors influencing the agency of high school English teachers in the context of the new curriculum reform.Using the existing theoretical foundation as the cornerstone,the study uses a combination of literature review,expert interview,and questionnaire,Telfer method and interview method,and adopts a combination of qualitative and quantitative research to conduct a line study on the factors influencing high school English teachers agency at three levels: individual teachers,school factors and social factors,with a view to providing suggestions for enhancing the development of high school English teachers’ agency.This study defines the concept and structure of teacher agency in the new curriculum reform,proposes three research questions,constructs an index system of factors influencing high school English teachers’ agency,prepares and revises a questionnaire on high school English teachers’ agency,and analyses the reliability and validity of the initial survey data.Amos 24.0 was used to complete the statistical analysis of the data collected from the 256 samples in an attempt to discover the overall level of high school English teachers’ agency in the curriculum reform in order to answer the first question.Based on the results of the questionnaire survey test,this study selected six high school English teachers who were willing to cooperate with the next step of qualitative research as interviewees,and used the qualitative analysis software Max QDA to enter and analyse the interview data,to examine in depth the changes and development of the six research subjects’ agency to participate in the new curriculum reform,and to further investigate the factors affecting high school English teachers’ agency in the new curriculum reform and their influence on the new curriculum reform in conjunction with the results of the questionnaire survey test.teachers’ agency and its main causes in order to answer the second question.Through the analysis of the path coefficient path results and based on the path coefficients,the influence weights of the various influencing factors were determined and the path to improve the agency of senior secondary English teachers was proposed as a way to answer the third question.The results show that: firstly,based on the research method using the rooted theory,the results of the research on the factors influencing teachers’ agency can be summarised mainly as personal,school and social factors through interviews with experts and teachers.In addition,further validation of the results obtained.Secondly,teachers’ personal agency levels were significantly higher than teachers’ environmental agency levels brought about by school and social factors,and it is worth noting that the observed variables of the curriculum reform factor among the social factors accounted for the largest proportion of the latent and dependent variables,and the effect of the influence was also the largest among all the secondary indicators,indicating that among all the secondary influencing factor variables,the effect of curriculum reform is the most significant.Thirdly,through path analysis,teachers’ agency can be improved through the following aspects,including developing teachers’ professional knowledge and skills development,teachers’ personal cultivation,school culture building,school system optimisation,strengthening teachers’ team building,social support,and strengthening policy protection for teachers’ professional development.The findings of this study can provide schools and teachers with reference suggestions on the factors influencing high school English teacher agency,in order to promote the improvement of high school English teacher agency,thereby improving the quality of classroom teaching and promoting students’ English proficiency.The overall level of English teacher agency in high schools in China is high.
