Explicitation In The Chinese Translation Of Airborne Wind Energy

The material for this translation practice is selected from chapter 6 to 9 of the book Airborne Wind Energy,authored by Uwe Ahrens.Given the communicative prominence of English informative texts in the dissemination of information,translations of such texts is required to be concise,accurate and logical in conveying the information to the target readers.In this context,in such a translation,faithfully representing the information contained in the source text and facilitating the target readers’ understanding is of paramount significance.To achieve these goals,careful attention must be paid to the translation process,with a focus on ensuring that the target text accurately conveys the original meaning and tone of the source text.In the selected chapters,it mainly dwells on the fundamental technical approaches to utilizing high-altitude wind energy,involving a significant number of technical words,jargons in the energy sector,names of some organizations,complicated long sentences,and other difficulties in understanding,which should be taken into account during the translation process,on what they mean exactly and how to present their implications appropriately.In this regard,the report has employed the method of explicitation.Explicitation,as an academic theory,was first put forward by Vinay and Darbelnet in 1958,which involves introducing information in a more specific manner,thereby enhancing the translation quality.Armed with explicitation,the report has succeeded in delivering a quality-assured translation featured with more complete and accurate information conveying of the source text,clearer logic considering the syntactic structure,and reader-friendly expression for better understanding.The main method of this report is case study.Via the translator’s detailed reading of the previous studies and corresponding preparations for the analysis of the translation,the report is in the theoretical framework of Klaudy’s classification on explicitation,that is:obligatory explicitation,optional explicitation and pragmatic explicitation.Upon completion of the translation and analysis,the report has identified specific translation techniques for explicitation that are comparatively feasible in the English-to-Chinese translation of such informative text and the like,such as specification,filling in ellipsis,restructuring sentences,adding notes,etc.The report recognizes that explicitation holds crucial to making the meaning of the original text clearer in the target text,reducing ambiguity,and lowering the cognitive load of target readers.With the aid of explicitation,the accuracy of wording,the logic between sentences and the completeness of information conveyed in the target text can be improved.Thus,it is hoped that this very report could serve as a reference for later translators in their translation practice.Additionally,it may contribute to a more in-depth exploration of explicitation theory and its application in translation practice.Meanwhile,in a bid to convey cultural information in the most appropriate way,the cultural differences between the source and target languages are also expected to be correctly dealt with,that is,through the adoption of explicitation,certain information lying in the source language community with background hinting behind cultural-loaded words can be clearly presented in translation,thus making the expression effect come into being so as to promote cultural exchanges and effective communication between the two languages.
