The report is based on the translation of the second Chapter of Offshore Construction: Law and Practice by Stephenson Harwood. In this excerpt,Stephenson Harwood focuses on the bidding and negotiation of contracts and offers a few practical ideas for resolving disputes in offshore equipment and shipbuilding.Offshore Construction: Law and Practice is a legal text that aims to introduce legal knowledge and enhance legal awareness among readers with precise and authoritative language. It contains many nominalization structures, which makes the translation more challenging.Firstly, the translator converts nominalization words into verbs, adjectives and adverbs.Secondly, the translator translates nominalization phrases into verb-object structures, attributive structures and clauses. Finally, the translator adopts the translation method of amplification and division to translate the syntactic nominalization. There are five chapters to this report. The first chapter is an introduction, which includes the background of the translation, analysis of the source text, significance of the translation task, and the structure of the report. The second chapter presents the description of translation process, which includes preparation before translation, preliminary translation, and proofreading and polishing of the target text. The third chapter is the functional equivalence theory and nominalization structure, which includes the introduction of functional equivalence theory, the application of functional equivalence theory, the definition, classifications and functions of nominalization. The fourth chapter is a case analysis of the translation methods and techniques under the guidance of Nida’s functional equivalence theory, including lexical level, phrasal level and syntactic level. The fifth chapter is the conclusion, which presents the findings and limitations of translation report.
