Published in 2019,The Fate of the Yellow River is a masterpiece of reportage literature. In this work, the author Chen Qiwen depicts the whole picture of the Yellow River through documentary interviews on the one hand;on the other hand, the Yellow River is used as a backdrop to show the real state of existence of the Chinese nation. As a subject between journalism and literature, reportage literature is a genre that emerges in response to the development of the times. Its main function is to record important events of the times or describe special things, and at the same time,to explore the real significance of social events or things. The author,Chen Qiwen, has devoted himself to creating reportage literature in recent years, and has become a representative writer of this kind of subject matter.Based on the fact that reportage literature is both journalistic and literary in nature, this practice report is based on Newmark’s theory of semantic and communicative translation. For the true and objective descriptions appearing in the text, the translation prefers to accurately convey the information of the original text,so the guidance of semantic translation is used to achieve this purpose. As for the contents that reflect literary colors,we should try to pursue the restoration of images and emotions for the readers of the target language, and in this case,we generally translate under the guidance of communicative translation. The translator’s research on translations dealing with journalistic and literary contents of the original text is carried out mainly in the following aspects. At lexical level, the translator mainly analyzed the translation of Chinese four-character patterns and proper nouns at various levels. At syntactic level, the translator analyzed sentences without subjects and sentences with multiple predicate verbs. At textual level, the translator studied two aspects logical conjunction and referential coherence.Through writing this translation practice report, the translator has improved her knowledge of reportage literature and enriched her theoretical knowledge and practical skills in translation.Hoping that this report can provide some references for translators of such works.
