A Translation Project Report On The Yellow House:A Memoir(Prologue And Ⅰ,Ⅱ Of MOVEMENT Ⅰ)

Nowadays,the social plight of the underclass is a common problem in the global human society.Unreasonable community planning,incomplete public facilities and defective welfare mechanism are all the reasons which cause the plight.But the root cause of this problem is lack of social concerns.As the best seller of U.S.in 2019,The Yellow House: A Memoir presents the status quo of neglected communities and groups in a city to general public,which has aroused the attention of the whole American society to the underclass.This book is of great significance for solving the social livelihood issues.This thesis is a translation project report on The Yellow House.The translator selects Prologue and I,II of MOVEMENT I of the book as translation materials.This part mainly tells the life story of Sarah’s grandmother and her children,and depicts the hidden side of New Orleans City from the perspective of the underclass.As a biography,The Yellow House integrates the authenticity and the literariness.Therefore,the translator tries to achieve the unity of authenticity and literariness in Chinese translation.In translation practice,the translator takes Peter Newmark’s Theory of Semantic Translation and Communicative Translation as overall theoretical guidance to ensure the equivalence of literary style between the translated text and the original text while maintaining the culture of the original work.Given the differences between English and Chinese,the translator uses such translation techniques as addition,depletion,annotation and adaptation to settle difficulties including semantic loss and semantic overlap during the translation process.Composed of four chapters: the introduction of the translate project,task description,case study and practice summary,the report mainly discusses the specific methods of literary translation under the comprehensive guidance of semantic translation and communicative translation.The translator not only hopes that other translators can get some inspirations and ideas from this thesis,but also wants to appeal to Chinese readers to pay more attention to the plight of the underclass groups in real life and help them solve the livelihood problems,so as to resolve the social confrontation.
