| This paper analyzes The Short Story Magazine,an important literary magazine in Shanghai during "Gudao"and Japanese-occupied Period of the 1940s,to explore the complex new trends of Shanghai Style literature in wartime Shanghai and the unique experience of Chinese modern literature development in this space and time.Due to the macro understanding of New Shanghai Style literature and the characteristics of The Short Story Magazine, this paper defines the balancing forces of the cultural field of this magazine as two sets of relationships. The first set of relationships is the mutual balance of political, economic, and cultural power, specifically expressed through the Anti-Japanese War,commercial market, and editorial and creative concepts. The game among these three powers constitutes the first set of balance relationships in the publication’s cultural field. The second set of relationships can be described as a combination of a series of binary value categories, namely:elegance and vulgarity, new and old, literature and business,Chinese and Western, etc. These divergent literary values presented a tendency towards fusion in wartime Shanghai, forming the second set of balancing relationships in The Short Story Magazine’s cultural field. The paper explores the implicit power field that restricts the development of The Short Story Magazine. The introduction section discusses the research status of The Short Story Magazine and Haipai literature,as well as the research methods and significance of this paper.Existing studies on The Short Story Magazine mainly focus on introducing the publication’s situation, while research on individual authors and specific texts has not been conducted.Existing research on The Short Story Magazine’s position has not surpassed the categories of leisure and popular culture, but the revolutionary significance of this publication in the history of Haipai literature and even modern literature cannot be ignored. The holistic research on Shanghai Style literature and its various genres is still not deep enough, and the concepts of"Shanghai Style" and "New Shanghai Style" also deserve to be reconsidered in the social and historical context. This paper introduces the concept of regional literary fields and cultural fields to examine the interaction between literary production and power constraints,in order to reconstruct the appearance of wartime Shanghai literature and the survival scene of writers, and to explore the role played by The Short Story Magazine in continuing the Shanghai Style literary tradition, reconstructing speech spaces, and promoting the emergence of New Shanghai Style literature. The first chapter presents an overview of The Short Story Magazine.Through the analysis of the historical context and the form of the magazine,it examines the tension relationship between the political and economic environment,as well as the editorial and creative ideas of the journal. The paper argues that the combination of"interestingness" and "transcendence" in New Shanghai Style literature reflects a political survival strategy,a commercial operation strategy, and a cultural self-rescue strategy. The second chapter discusses the main components of New Shanghai Style literature—popular literature,new-vernacular Literature, and new citizen literature, and focuses on Bao Tianxiao,Tan Zhengbi,Chen Ruhui, and Yu Qie.In the binary value perspective of old and new, elegance and vulgarity, the "newness" of New Shanghai Style literature in creative practice can be summarized into two tums:one is the turn to hidden narrative forms, and the other is the turn to in-depth exploration of real life. The third chapter focuses on the creation of newcomers in the literary world launched by the publication and the content other than the original literary texts of the publication. This is also the new strategy of The Short Story Magazine to prevent literature from being constrained by the environment of the occupied areas and to gain a space for speech in the oppressive power field, which has played a role in enriching the culture of the times as much as possible and maintaining the endogenous nature of wartime literature. The literary periodicals in Shanghai during the wartime represented by The Short Story Magazine, under the external power checks and balances of economy, politics, and culture,as well as the internal checks and balances of multiple literary value categories, presented the characteristics of literary texts with hidden narratives, mining life, and heterogeneous and rich cultural picture of the Shanghai Style embodies the new quality of the Shanghai Style literature during the Anti-Japanese War,promotes the formation of the New Shanghai Style, and forms a special experience in the development of modern Chinese literature history. |
