This report is a case study of English-Chinese simulated consecutive interpreting of a discussion "How Can Nature Fast-Track the Recovery of Our Planet".The discussion, held by CGEP(Center on Global Energy Policy)focuses on the urgent need to employ a range of measures, especially the Nature-based Solution to limit global warming and meet the rising global energy demand at the same time. This report is guided by the Adaptation Theory brought forward by Verschueren.According to the Adaptation Theory, language use is a process of continuously making linguistic choices.Linguistic choices are made both in the process of producing and interpreting an utterance.Under the guidance of the Adaptation Theory, this report mainly focuses on four difficulties:vague references, idioms, long and complicated sentences and logical fuzziness.Vague references tend to make the interpreter misunderstand what the speakers say while idioms cause inappropriate literal interpreting.Long and complicated sentences bring great challenges for the interpreter in understanding the source texts, taking notes and delivering the source texts.Logical fuzziness makes it harder for the interpreter to decode the original sentences.Through analysis of specific examples, the interpreter proposes four solutions to deal with these difficulties respectively.Specifically speaking, firstly, the solution of explicitation is utilized to make the referential meanings of vague references clearer based on the specific context.Secondly, the interpreter is encouraged to adopt the solution of paraphrasing to explain the connotations of English idioms.Thirdly, the solution of restructuring is employed to change the sequence of constituents in English sentences.Lastly, the interpreter uses the solution of logic optimization to make the logic clear-cut.It is hoped that the solutions concluded in this report will help equip the interpreter herself better and serve as useful suggestions for other interpreters when they are confronted with similar difficulties.
