From the standpoint of sociology of body, this paper reviewed the body writing of late Qing science fiction.Taking the body as an important field for the discourse of modernity in the late Qing Dynasty, through the exploration of the modern body concept, the evolution process of modern civilization in the late Qing Dynasty is fully concerned, the attention to the correlation and interaction between the body concept presented by late Qing science fiction, the social-cultural phenomena and the stream of thought at that time are also paid fully. The first chapter focuses on the occurrence of body writing in late Qing science fiction. The introduction of western modern scientific knowledge and body aesthetic discourse made late Qing science fiction present a body picture different from that of pre-modern times. On the one hand, this change in knowledge structure stemmed from the cultural exchange and dissemination between China and the West caused by Western learning;on the other hand, the reason is people at that time tried to save the nation out of the real crisis. The social crisis also triggered the birth of a new national myth of "man-made",which raised the modern imagination of the body from the physiological level to the spiritual level. The second chapter mainly discusses the specific presentation of the socialized body in late Qing science fiction, and explains the dual relationship between the body and society with specific theories in Sociology of Body. The social body always modifies the physiological perception of the body. Therefore, the weak and decadent attributes of the late Qing society make individuals have special experience of weakness and illness in physiological functions; The high-frequency,concentrated perception of defilement by individuals in late Qing science fiction shows the appeal and pursuit of modern civilization order in society;Late Qing science fiction presents an objectification tendency in the writing of female bodies.Women’s physical experience and personal needs are ignored as objects. The third chapter reveals the flaws and insufficiencies in the exploration of the modern body concept in late Qing science fiction.People’s excessive optimism and comprehensive acceptance of modern western scientific knowledge made the concept of body present a dualistic separation of body and mind; The deep-rooted traditional Chinese social culture has also made the transformation of modern body concept difficult. The hesitation about the core organs of the body in the body writing of late Qing science fiction shows the fierce confrontation between Chinese and Western body concepts; The confusion, tortuousness and tendency of re-enchantment in the disenchantment process of the concept of soul also indicate that the construction of the modern body concept is still an unfinished business, reflecting the difficulty and complexity of the exploration of modernity in the late Qing Dynasty. While presenting an aspect of the practice of modernity in the late Qing Dynasty,"The body" also puts forward a new perspective for the study of late Qing science fiction. From the perspective of "The body",late Qing science fiction is placed into the overall field of social culture in the Qing Dynasty, which not only facilitates the fully recognition of the close relationship between late Qing science fiction literary discourse and the modern practice of social medical care, education, culture, and other fields in the late Qing Dynasty, but also provides a new entry point to understand the important role played by late Qing science fiction in the dissemination of western learning and cultural exchange between China and the West.
