| Around 7000-6000 years ago,the Pearl River estuary in Lingnan Region, there was an archaeological culture containing painted pottery,Dawan Culture.Among the pottery of the Dawan Culture, the ring-foot ware was unique. In this paper,I divide them into four categories according to the shape of the objects. There is a clear evolution with six development phases just as the overall development phases of Dawan Culture. Each phase reflects its own style of artifact form and fashion sense.Comparing those ring-foot pottery of the Dawan Culture and those in the Yangtze River basin, especially in Hunan,we find that there were many similar characteristics in the aspects of modeling features and the decoration of objects. The ring-foot pottery with restrained mouth and chalk with stamped ornamentation in Dawan Culture were influenced by those of Gaomiao Culture or Tangjiagang Culture directly or indirectly. While the open containers with corrugated wall might came form Tangjiagang Culture. The techniques of decoration were influenced by Daxi Culture. When the Dawan Culture came to an end,we can still find those similar ring-foot containers in Guye Culture and Hedang Culture. |
