In the middle and late Tang Dynasty,a number of frontier poems with the theme of the “Hehuang” problem emerged. This part of the poem reflects the major social problems of the Middle and Late Tang Dynasty, namely the “Hehuang” problem. These poems rich in content, have artistic value, which occupies an important position in the history of the development of the poetry in Tang Dynasty. The issue of “Hehuang” was a major social issue of national concern in the middle and late Tang Dynasty.Since the outbreak of the An Lushan Rebellion in the 755 AD,the vast northwest regions of Hexi,Longyou, including the “Hehuang” area, and even parts of Guan-nei Dao and Jian-nan Dao,have successively fallen to Tibetan.“Hehuang”thus became a synonym for the vast occupied areas. After the fall of “Hehuang”,the Tang Dynasty fell into civil strife between the splittism and the eunuch dictatorship, with frequent wars, poor people’s livelihood, and political corruption.Although the imperial court had a motion to retake “Hehuang”,it was never realized.“Hehuang” has fallen for a hundred years, and it was not recovered until 851 AD.During the fall of“Hehuang” for nearly a century, this problem became the heartache of the whole country of the Tang Dynasty, and the recovery of “Hehuang” also became a symbolic vocabulary for scholars to express their ideals and realize their ambitions to serve the country.“Hehuang” has become the heart knot and dream of the Tang people in the past hundred years.Since the emergence of the “Hehuang” problem, poets in the middle and late Tang Dynasties have been reflecting on this problem by writing a large number of poems. From an aesthetic and emotional point of view, these poems carry the Tang people’s century-old restoration ideals, express the urgent desire of the remnants of the“Hehuang” to return to the Tang Dynasty, rebuke the ugly face of the greedy beetle who does not think about serving the country and only indulge in pleasure and comforts, records the unique life course of the Chinese Han ethnic group who has fallen into Tibetan, and expresses the poet’s pain, indignation, and national thinking. The “Hehuang”frontier poems of the Middle and Late Tang Dynasties has shaped a unique imagery system, which mainly includes geographical image groups, customs image groups, and war image groups, which contains unique cultural symbolic significance.Additionally, these poems have a unique aesthetic style, among which the narrative poems are simple and straightforward, and the lyric poems are sorrowful and depressed.
