The sudden COVID-19 pandemic has forced people to rely on the Internet for communication,which plays an increasingly important role in their work and life.This is a report of the English-Chinese translation of The Virtual Sales Handbook: A Hands-on Approach to Engaging Customers(Excerpts).This book mainly explains how to use the virtual world constructed by the network to carry out work.Therefore,this report has practical significance.By analyzing typical cases from the perspective of the Communicative Translation Theory,this report can provide reference for the translation practice of guide texts.This report first introduces the background of the task,the linguistic features of the source text,the translation process,and the Communicative Translation Theory and its application.It goes on to analyze typical cases in the translation practice with the help of the communicative translation theory at the lexical,syntactic and textual levels and explore corresponding translation methods and techniques.The case study shows that at the lexical level,for the rendition of idioms and polysemous words,the method of free translation is mostly adopted to convey the meaning of English idioms in a concise manner and provide readers with smooth translation.At the syntactic level,translation skills like addition,shift,adjustment of word order,structure reorganization,and sentence reorganization are used in the rendition of parentheses and complex sentences to ensure the readability of the translation.At the textual level,techniques of sentence reorganization,the adjustment of word order,and addition are employed to translate argumentative texts,which can help present the translation to the reader with clear logic,while the translation techniques of structure reorganization,addition,and division,etc.,can be adopted in the rendition of narrative texts to make the sequence of narration conform to that commonly used by Chinese.Through these methods and techniques,the translation can not only accurately convey the information to the target language readers,but also conform to the language expression and reading habits of the target readers.
