The present report is based on the author’s simulated E-C simultaneous interpreting for the documentary Indian Naval Academy during her internship in the International College of Defense Studies,NDU,PLA,China.Guided by Halliday’s Register Theory, the author analyzed examples chosen from her interpreting practice according to the seven categories of typical realization of Register variables described by Munday.Halliday noted that register comprises three variables: field, tenor and mode. The three variables of register correspond to three metafunctions of languages respectively, namely, ideational function, interpersonal function and textual function. These metafunctions are formed by the choices of lexicogrammar made by the text producer.Based on Halliday’s Register Theory,Munday gave a more specific and concrete description of typical realization of Register variables:field is realized in subject-specific terminology and transitivity structures;tenor is realized in pronouns, modality and evaluative lexis;mode is realized in cohesion, thematic and information structures.Analysis of these typical realization can help the interpreter identify important elements in the source language so as to give a desirable rendition and achieve equivalence of field, tenor and mode between the target language and the source language.Three findings are drawn from the analysis of this report: firstly, sufficient pre-task preparation is conducive to achieving equivalence of field between the source language and the target language;secondly, interpreters need to make dynamic choices in the process of interpreting when statuses and roles of the interactants change;thirdly,it is advisable for interpreters to identify cohesion and thematic structures of the source language,so as to grasp and convey the speaker’s intended meaning.
