| This report selects maritime texts as its research objects. The maritime conference documents selected, which are featured by its formal language and precise expression, contain a large number of noun modifiers. The structure of “the head noun plus noun modifiers” is widely used in formal texts due to its simple structure carrying a lot of information. The large number of noun modifiers adds difficulties to the understanding of the original text, and their translation also affects the quality of the whole translation text.Until now,few researches have been conducted on the translation of noun modifiers in maritime texts. Therefore, this report, guided by Newmark’s translation theory, studies the translation of noun modifiers in maritime texts. The noun modifiers discussed in this report mainly include nouns, adjectives, prepositional phrases and non-finite verb phrases that appear frequently in the selected maritime conference documents.Under the guidance of Newmark’s translation theory, the author studies the translation of noun modifiers in terms of the part of speech, position, logical relationship, and the differences between English and Chinese expressions, and summarizes four translation methods, namely, amplification, inversion, restoration and division, hoping to be useful for the translation of relevant maritime conference documents. |
