This translation practice text is the first chapter of Transpacific Steam: The Story of Steam Navigation from the Pacific Coast of North America to the Far East and the Antipodes(1867-1941)written by American writer E.Mowbray Tate.It belongs to maritime historical documentary text and contains a large number of long sentences with complicated components and logical relations.By comparing the differences between English and Chinese structures, this translation practice report divides English long sentences into three types:simple long sentences, parallel long sentences and compound long sentences.Based on the principle of Christiane Nord’s "Function plus Loyalty",this paper summarizes four methods of translating English long sentences into Chinese: sequential method, cutting, change order method and recasting. The sequential method is suitable for translating long sentences whose logical or temporal sequence is similar to that in Chinese;Cutting is suitable for translating long sentences with many connectives and distinct sense groups; The third method can be used in translating long sentences that need to be changed or adjusted;Recasting is suitable for translating long sentences with complex structure and logic.Based on this translation practice, the principle of “Function plus Loyalty” is found to play a guiding role in translating the English long sentences, and the translator can comprehensively use the above four translation methods to make the Chinese translation of English long sentences meet the communicative purpose to the greatest extent.
