The key elements of geographical space in Zhang Kangkang’s novels mainly involve geographical landscapes and character images. The novel presents the geographical landscapes of Jiangnan,Northeast, and Beijing. These landscapes not only imply the place where the story takes place, but also have narrative functions such as promoting plot development, shaping character images, and expressing the subjective emotions of the characters. The novel also portrays three types of characters: flexible women in the south of the Yangtze River, northerners in the black land, and northerners of different classes. The geographical spatial elements such as landscapes and characters in Zhang Kangkang’s novels are organized in an orderly manner through dialect and spatial construction techniques. The use of Northeast dialect,Wunong soft language, and Beijing dialect has added a lot of regional flavor to Zhang Kangkang’s novels."Cross regional" spatial settings, frequent spatial transformations, and following realistic spatial logic are the main techniques used by Zhang Kangkang. The motivation for Zhang Kangkang’s creation is inseparable from his complex geographical roots(his ancestral home in Guangdong, his hometown in Hangzhou, his temporary residence in Shanghai, his delegation to Heilongjiang, his multinational travel, and his settlement in Beijing). As an important component of geographical roots, hometown provided inspiration for Zhang Kangkang’s novel creation.Based on the geographical experience of his hometown,Zhang Kangkang enriched his novel creation through the direct misappropriation of landscapes, the indirect utilization and expanded utilization of his hometown experience. In addition, the free and independent literary themes, the creative method of comparative narration, and the rich sense of color expressed in Zhang Kangkang’s novels are also closely related to her geographical experience. The rich geographical experience brought Zhang Kangkang’s creative inspiration and materials, but also to a certain extent limited the exertion of Zhang Kangkang’s creative imagination.
