General Senior High School English Curriculum Standards emphasizes that English teaching aims to develop core literacy and pays more attention to the themes and discourses of reading materials,language and cultural knowledge,language skills and learning strategies.Based on Daniel’s(2002)reading circle model,this study expects to confirm whether the application of the reading circle model can strengthen senior high school students’ English reading self-efficacy and consequently improve English reading achievement by applying the reading circle model in English reading classes.This study demonstrates that the application of the reading circle model can strengthen senior high school students’ English reading self-efficacy and improve their English reading achievement,and can also provide some inspiration and help in enhancing the effectiveness of senior high school English reading instruction.Guided by scaffolding theory,cooperative learning theory and autonomous learning theory,this study adopts an application research method including the questionnaires,tests and interview.The author selects 49 students who participate in a school-based English reading course at a senior high school in Zhaoqing City,Guangdong Province as the subjects of the experimental study.Dimensions of senior high school students’ English reading self-efficacy questionnaire include sense of reading ability,sense of reading control,sense of benefitting from reading,sense of self-confidence,awareness of reading planning and performances of resisting environmental disturbance.By using SPSS 27.0 to analyze the data obtained in the experiment,this study answers the following two questions:(1)Does the application of reading circle teaching model strengthen English reading self-efficacy of senior high school students? If so,to what extent?(2)Does the application of reading circle teaching model promote students’ achievement in English reading? If so,to what degree? The results of the study are as follows:(1)The reading circle teaching model has improved senior high school students’ English reading self-efficacy.Among the dimensions of English reading self-efficacy,sense of benefitting from reading increases most significantly,followed by sense of reading control,awareness of reading planning,sense of self-confidence,performances of resisting environmental disturbance and sense of reading ability.(2)The reading circle teaching model greatly improves senior high school students’ English reading achievement.Based on the results of the study,the author puts forward the following implications for teaching English reading in senior high school:(1)Enable students to get exposed to various and suitable books according to the students’ learning level and learning interest.(2)Offer students more chances to think.(3)Encourage students to take an active part in classroom activities.(4)Train students to take full advantage of reading environment.
