Research On Artistry Expression Of Chinese "Direct Cinema"

Direct Cinema which emerged in the 1960 s emphasizes a non-intervention way of documentary creation.Since Direct Cinema was introduced to China,Chinese documentary creators have broken through the stereotyped principle of Direct Cinema by incorporating an appropriate degree of intervention into creation and integrating artistry creation approaches with Direct Cinema,thus increasing the commercial,social and artistic qualities of cinematic works.This paper explores the formation,forms and implications of the artistry of Chinese Direct Cinema,as well as its development space and prospect.On this basis,the graduation documentary work “How far in the future is‘love’” is created.This paper consists of five sections.The first section summarizes the emergence and development of Direct Cinema.Direct Cinema originated from the explorations and attempts of the Drew Associates who created works without employing voice-over,intervention or interview.Instead,creators assumed the position of spectators and directly presented truth and facts through images.With a huge global influence,Direct Cinema is understood and applied in different ways by different creators.In the second section,the factors and basis contributing to the emergence of Direct Cinema are explored.Chinese Direct Cinema is in the background of technological progress,social change and audience’s aesthetic enhancement of documentary,which promoted it to take the path of artistry expression.The civilian perspective,humanistic concern and moderate intervention of Chinese Direct Cinema have also facilitated the artistry expression of such cinema to take root.The third section analyzes the form and implications of the artistry expression of Chinese Direct Cinema.Specifically,the form of the artistry expression of Chinese Direct Cinema lies in the utilization of artistry creation approaches to enhance the films’ focus on themes and the smoothness of montage,further highlighting the conflicts and reinforcing the narrative structure to address commercial challenges and satisfy aesthetic needs.The fourth section explores the space and prospect of the artistry expression of Chinese Direct Cinema.The degree and form of the artistry expression of Chinese Direct Cinema are restricted by the core concepts of Direct Cinema itself.However,the spirit that it carries is worthy of creators’ continued efforts in order to explore a vaster development route,inherit documentary spirit and record changes in the era.The fifth section presents the graduation work“How far in the future is ‘love’” as an example of the application of the artistry expression.From the “spectator” perspective,moderate intervention is performed in the documentary and the creation approach of artistry expression is employed to document an older unmarried young man with a view of scrutinizing the marriage problem in society,followed by a review and reflection upon the work.
