A Report On Escort Interpreting At Liaoshen Campaign Memorial

In today’s global communication and interconnectivity,tourism has become one of the important ways of cultural exchange.Interpreters serve as mediators to build bridges of communication between people of different languages,cultures,and races when they seek to understand and learn from each other.This summer,at the invitation of a Nigerian student studying in China,the author acted as her escort interpreter during her visit to Liaoshen Campaign Memorial,interpreting the exhibits and historical facts to achieve the goal of cross-cultural communication.During the escort interpreting process,due to various subjective and objective reasons,information loss was hard to avoid.The author intends to identify and classify all the instances of information loss that occurred in her interpreting by reviewing and analyzing the text transcribed from the recording of the interpreting before pinpointing and revealing its causes and putting forward some coping strategies under the guidance of Translation Variation Theory to solve the problem.Upon analysis,the author identifies three primary types of information loss in this task: loss of factual information,cultural information and logical information,which were caused by high information density,cultural barrier,and psychological stress.To tackle these issues,the author employs coping strategies derived from Translation Variation Theory,namely selective interpreting,explanatory interpreting and editing interpreting to analyze representative examples,and effectively addresses the aforementioned types of information loss.Through the analysis of this task and the summary of the experience,the author hopes to avoid information loss as much as possible in the future interpreting practices,be prepared according to the requirements for any interpreting tasks assigned to her,and meanwhile improve her adaptability and interpreting skills.The author also hopes to be more adept at promoting cross-cultural communication and to convey information in a smoother and more accurate way,sharing Chinese stories with the world.
