With the development of human society and industry, greenhouse gas emissions are causing the earth to warm rapidly. The global ecosystem, economy, and humanity are facing a grave crisis. To ensure the sustainable development of human society, measures must be taken to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The source text is excerpted from chapters 1-3 of John Doerr’s Speed and Scale: An Action Plan to Solve the Current Climate Crisis, which is characterized as an informative and vocative text. The language is rigorous and objective, and the information is accurate. In response to the current climate crisis,a net-zero emissions plan for industry, agriculture, transportation, etc.and the policies and actions needed are proposed, calling on the world to act to solve the climate crisis and protect the planet. This translation practice report uses Catford’s translation shift theory as a guide to translate and analyze the text from two aspects: level shifts and category shifts.Translation shift theory can help translators analyze at the lexical and syntactic levels and accurately translate the content of original texts. This report is divided into four parts: the first part is a description of the translation task, and the second part introduces the description of the translation process. The third part describes the translation case analysis, and the last part is the translation summary. In this paper, the following conclusions are drawn from the study of the source text through Catford’s translation shift theory: First, tense shift and structure shift are used more often in this translation process.Since the source text uses a variety of tenses,it is necessary to pay attention to the conversion of tenses when translating to ensure the accuracy of the translation;Given that the structure of the two languages is different, structure shift and class shift are also more common in the translation, such as the shift between passive and active voice;the shift between verbs and nouns.Second, this text should be translated with a full understanding of the essential meaning of the original text before determining the translation to ensure accurate information. This translation practice explores the feasibility of Catford’s translation conversion theory to guide translation, which has implications for translators to translate such texts.
