The Difficulties And Solutions Of Translating English Parenthesis

Parenthesis is commonly used in English that takes the form of words,phrases,or subordinate clauses and presents a range of functions such as giving examples,providing additions,and making comparisons in sentences.In English,the parenthesis is diversified in content and its position is flexible.Improper translation may lead to loose structure and change of semantic focus,affecting the semantic expression.As a result,studying the translation of parenthesis is of significance and value.This thesis focuses on the translation of parenthesis and investigates the translation difficulties and solutions of parenthesis structures based on the translation practice.The source text of the translation practice is based on Chapter Ten and Chapter Eleven of Depression Conceptualization and Treatment,in which parenthesis occurs frequently and can be divided into two types,which are typical parenthesis and expanded parenthesis.Based on these,the translation difficulties are summarized into three types in the process of practice,which include diversity of typical parenthesis structures,complexity of expanded parenthesis structures,and a mixture of typical and expanded parenthesis structures.These three types of translation difficulties are specifically divided into the following aspects,including the form of consecutive use and the frequent occurrence of nested structures of typical parenthesis,the lengthy form of consecutive use of expanded parenthesis and the complex embedded structures of clauses in expanded parenthesis,the consecutive use of both typical and expanded parenthesis and the nested structures of typical parenthesis within expanded parenthesis.Combined with representative cases in practice,solutions are proposed for the above translation difficulties.Firstly,structural fusion and inversion are chosen to solve the difficulties of the form of consecutive use and the frequent occurrence of nested structures of typical parenthesis.Secondly,the sentence component conversion and the structure splitting are chosen to solve the difficulties of the lengthy form of consecutive use of expanded parenthesis and the complex embedded structures of clauses in expanded parenthesis.Finally,the structural simplification and the embedding are chosen to solve the difficulties of the consecutive use of both typical and expanded parenthesis and the nested structures of typical parenthesis within expanded parenthesis.As the case studies demonstrate,the solutions proposed in practice are workable which can improve the translation quality.It is expected that the difficulties and solutions proposed in the translation practice will serve as a reference for translators who will conduct parenthesis translation in the future.
