A Report On The C-E Translation Of Architectural Engineering Specification

Economic globalization has brought countries closer together.Meanwhile,the exchanges between China and various countries in the field of architectural engineering projects are gaining momentum.Therefore,translation of architectural engineering specifications is increasingly needed in language service industry.In 2021,the translator was entrusted with a task,translating specifications,including Special Article on Fire Emergency and Evacuation Lighting Design,Water Supply and Drainage Design Instructions.The source text is of science-technology style.Different from those general literary texts,its language is more objective and concise in use,and more rigorous and accurate in logic.With Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence theory as the guiding principle,the whole report is divided into three parts.The first part mainly introduces the background of the translation project,analyzes language features of the architectural engineering specification and the requirements from clients.The second part specifies pre-translation preparation,while-translation and post-translation efforts.The third part expounds on functional equivalence theory serving as guidance for architectural engineering specifications.The translator illustrates the theory with specific examples and then implements a series of translation methods including substitution,conversion,amplification and omission in lexical level;voice transformation,combination and splitting,adjustment in logical order in syntactic level;application of cohesive devices and pronouns in textual level to maintain linguistic and stylistic equivalence in the translation of architectural engineering specification.This report summarizes the difficulties encountered in the translation of architectural engineering specification followed by coping strategies,which is expected to deepen translators’ understanding of the functional equivalence theory,improve translators’ expressing accuracy and textual coherence in the process of translation practice.Moreover,case analysis explains how Functional Equivalence Theory could play a certain guiding role on the Chinese-English translation of architectural engineering specification.It is hoped that the report provides a useful reference for translation in the field of architectural engineering.
