Astudy Of EVS In Simultaneous Interpretation

At a press conference in 2022 where State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi responded to queries from journalists,the material for this simultaneous interpretation mock was gathered.It was discovered by the author that a long Ear Voice Span(EVS)in reality has a detrimental effect on the interpretation,reduces the listener’s comfort,and heightens the psychological strain on the interpreter,leading to some potential issues like information missing,logical mistakes,and verbose language.Guided by G.V.Chernov’s compression strategy,this practice report aims to analyze the impact of long Ear Voice Span on the quality of Chinese-English simultaneous interpretation,as well as the reasons for its generation,and propose corresponding solutions.The reasons include: first,poor mastery of terminology;second,uneven distribution of the interpreter’s attention,leading to issues such as the interpretation being lagging behind the source material and missing data.;third,verbose expressions.The interpreter does not clarify the inner logic of the speaker’s speech and cannot cut or merge the information in it in time.The first two points require the interpreter to build up basic skills and accumulate more basic knowledge and practical experience,so the author will not elaborate on them.This report focuses on the third point,and proposes corresponding solutions.It is proved that syllable compression can shorten the interpreting time and make the interpretation more concise,and also help interpreters to allocate their attention reasonably;lexical compression can guide interpreters to omit the interpretation of secondary information such as personal opinions so as to highlight the core information of the source language;syntactic compression can reduce the difficulty of expression of interpreters to improve the accuracy of the translation;semantic compression can reduce repetitive information,streamline the translation and improve the efficiency of interpretation;by utilizing situational compression,the commonly-known background information can be eliminated and the EVS can be shortened,resulting in more interpretation time for the interpreter and a higher quality of interpretation.To some extent,this practice report can be used as a reference for future interpreters to accurately regulate the EVS in Chinese-English simultaneous interpretation,thus making the interpretation more lucid,fluent and precise.
