A Report On The Scientific Text From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

With the increasing demand for material with specific properties in engineering applications,smart material is gaining more and more attention.Shape memory alloys have been widely studied in the field of smart materials.At the present,there are still few monographs in Chinese compared to the increasing number of researchers in related fields.Meanwhile,the translation of scientific and technical texts in related fields is relatively insufficient,and the theoretical module is not yet firmly built and lacks of universality,which urgently calls for translation research related to scientific and technical texts.The Skopos theory was proposed by Vermeer in 1978,and its core lies in the translation orientation to the reading purpose of the target readers.The Skopos theory contains three main principles,namely,skopos rule,coherence rule and the fidelity rule.The Skopos theory emphasizes the purpose of the target readers,and the translator can choose translation techniques flexibly while minimize modifying the meaning of the source language,which is highly suitable for guiding the translation of scientific and technical texts.In this report,the author selects the first chapter of the book Shape Memory Alloys:Modeling and Engineering Applications for translation,and the source text is about 13,000 words.The source text is an academic literature.It has the characteristics of typical scientific and technological literature,with rigorous description,clear logic and precise concept.The first of shape memory alloys.Based on the Skopos theory,this translation practice report mainly adopts the qualitative research method and the literature method to discuss the difficulties in lexical terms,syntax and discourse in the translation practice of scientific research review texts and proposes corresponding solutions.Through analyzing the selected typical examples,this translation practice report finds that the Skopos theory has certain guiding significance for the translation practice of scientific and technical texts,which can effectively improve the translation quality and better achieve the purpose of enabling the readers to quickly understand the basic and research frontiers in this field,and this report could be a reference for the translation work in the related fields in the future.
