| This thesisis a report on the English-Chinese translation. The material for this translation is selected from the second part of Spring,a novel by British writer Ali Smith. The novel has two protagonists,a middle-age director Richard, and Brittan,a detainee custody office. It uses two story lines to link the writer’s creative theme of calling on contemporary people to continue to search for love and hope. The novel is written in a stream-of-consciousness style, with an original perspective and detailed psychological descriptions, reflecting the relevance in today’s British society.House’s Translation Quality Assessment Model aims to establish a standard for evaluating the quality of a translation. This report analyzes and explores the translation in three aspects: lexical, syntactic, and rhetorical, under the guidance of the House’s Translation Quality Assessment Model. At the level of vocabulary, the translator adopts free translation with domestication to translate creative nouns, vulgar words and colloquial expressions. In the syntactic level, the translator has made reasonable sentence breaks and sequencing adjustments, thus enhancing the fluency. In the rhetorical level, the translator uses literal translation, which makes the translation closer to the expression style of the source text and improves the acceptance of the translation by domestic readers.Under the guidance of House’s Translation Quality Assessment Model, the translator has gained a better understanding of literary translation, especially the current social situation concerning illegal immigrants in Britain, and has become more accurate in understanding the reading needs of domestic and foreign readers, and these valuable experiences will promote the translator’s own growth. At the same time, the translator hopes that this report will be helpful to other translators in translating similar texts in the future. |
