| The report is based on the translation practice of Translation and Paratexts by Kathryn Batchelor, published by Routledge in 2018.In this book, she explores the interdisciplinary relationship between paratexts and translation studies and contextualizes the concept of paratext in translation studies, thus constructing an open and inclusive paratext theory.Batchelor’s work on translation has injected new blood into the field of translation and paratext research. This work is an academic text related to translation, characterized by standardized language and rigorous logic.Accordingly, these features must be retained in an attempt to be faithful to the original to the greatest extent. In the translation process, the author found that the text poses great challenges to the author due to its forward-looking thoughts. Some linguistic difficulties are still encountered, mainly manifested in the following aspects: the frequent occurrence of professional vocabulary, formal words, nominalization, passive structures, and hedges;extensive long and complex sentences for better cohesion and coherence.Accordingly, the flexible and rational use of various translation methods is the key to ensuring translation quality.House’s TQA model is based on equivalence theory.Guided by House’s model, the author tries to analyze the register of academic texts and explore effective translation methods, aiming at the translation problems.Through typical case analysis, the author draws a comparison between the ST and the TT from the three dimensions: Field,Tenor, and Mode.Subsequently, the author employs different translation methods, such as reference to parallel texts, extension, voice change, correspondence, conversion, and division,to deal with the problems arising in the E-C translation process. It is found that this model is specifically operational for guiding the translation of academic texts.Accordingly, the author expects that the preliminary findings of this practice report can provide a reference for the translation practice of academic texts as well as future research and application to House’s TQA model. The report has been organized in the following way.Chapter One begins with an overall description of the research background, the task description, and the project’s significance.Chapter Two lays out the translation process, including pre-translation preparation,while-process translation, and post-translation quality control.Chapter Three is concerned with the theoretical basis of this practice and gives an overview of its applicability to academic texts.Chapter Four discusses the representation of Field, reproduction of Tenor, and reconstruction of Mode through specific case analysis. On this basis, the thesis proves the applicability of House’s model to translating academic texts.Chapter Five gives a brief summary and critique of the findings gained from the whole report writing process, dealing with limitations and directions of improvement. |
