Since the Reform Movement in the late 19 th century,the modern press has increasingly become the ideological position of Chinese progressives.At that time,China was in the transition from tradition to modernity.Progressives called for science and democracy,and scientific enlightenment became one of the themes of The Times.Oriental Magazine,founded in 1904,was born in this special background.Therefore,with the purpose of “enlightening the people and connecting East Asia”,this magazine actively introduces western science and promotes social improvement in accordance with the inherent laws of newspapers and media and the logic of social operation.At the same time,the magazine has been published for more than 40 years,published all kinds of content,influence the Chinese at home and abroad,known as the “database of modern Chinese history”,has become an important library for later generations to study the social changes of modern China.This paper is divided into five chapters.The first chapter analyzes the conditions for the germination of science communication in Oriental Journal.The occurrence of various political changes and the development of national capitalist economy in the late Qing Dynasty promoted the emergence of two newspaper running peaks in modern history,and also made Western learning become an important content of newspaper communication.Shanghai,with its superior geographical location and developed economy,has become the frontier of Western learning communication,which gave birth to this magazine and its scientific communication practice.The emergence of new intellectuals in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China also helped to expand the scientific communication of the magazine.The second chapter focuses on the subject of science communication in Oriental Magazine.The Commercial Press,as the responsible publishing agency of the magazine,actively learns advanced western printing technology,and regards the inheritance of culture and the opening of people’s wisdom as its highest social responsibility.The editors,led by Du Yaquan,advocated compatibility and economy,learned from the strengths of others,and encouraged the public to contribute actively.Their joint efforts raised the science communication of the journal to a new level.The third chapter makes a quantitative analysis of the science reports in Oriental Magazine from five aspects: quantity,content,subject,source,genre and length.The fourth chapter explores the science communication strategy of this magazine,and points out that the magazine actively improves the quality of content and gradually systemizes the form of communication.At the same time,it pays attention to the construction of scientific view,regards science as a weapon to transform society,not only pays attention to the practical function of science,but also advocates the humanistic care of science.The fifth chapter considers the historical value and practical inspiration of the science communication of Oriental Magazine.From the historical dimension,the science communication of Oriental magazine enlightened the scientific thought of Chinese people and promoted the development of the scientific cause in modern China.From the perspective of reality,the communication practice of magazines is still enlightening for today’s science communication work,and this paper points out that the conservatism of the magazine at that time was out of rational and calm thinking,rather than stubborn reactionary,and its values still have some redeeming value.
