| With the development of society, children nowadays own more and more material possessions;however, their spiritual life is often neglected. It is estimated by the World Health Organization that about one fifth of children and adolescents in the world are faced with more or less emotional and behavioral problems.Works on child psychology play an important role in introducing the latest researches in the field, disseminating correct conceptions of parenting, and preventing children from committing crimes.Translating such relevant books not only enriches people’s knowledge and awareness of child’s psychology in China, but also facilitates the exchange of research on child’s psychology among scholars from different countries. This project excerpts the first chapter of Child Psychology as the source text. The first chapter plays a primary role in introducing the latest findings in the field. The text contains a large number of nominalizational structures,culture-loaded words, abstract nouns, and sentences with complex constructions or passive voice, which bring many difficulties to rendering a smooth, logical and clear translation.Given this circumstance, this report analyzes and addresses the afore-mentioned difficulties from both lexical and syntactic levels. The purpose of this translation is to accurately convey academic information to general and professional readers.Under the guidance of the Skopos Theory, the author thoroughly understood the original text and analyzed the structure of sentences so as to consider the expression effect and the original purposes in the words and sentences which are difficult to translate;then the author addressed them by various means according to specific situations.Firstly, guided by the rules of skopos and coherence, the technique of conversion was adopted to translate abstract nouns, nominalizaions, adjectives and prepositions into a readable version.Secondly, under the guidance of the rules of skopos and fidelity, paraphrase and annotation were used to address culture-loaded words and professional terms for a comprehensible translation. Finally, for complex sentences and passive voices, guided by the rules of skopos and coherence, the techniques of amplification, reversing, division and shift were employed to endow the target version with the expected effects of the original author. In this way, target readers can enjoy the reading experience greatly. On the basis of keeping a balance between the theme and language difficulties of the source text, appropriately applying these translation techniques can achieve a smooth, faithful and understandable target version, which brings an enjoyable reading experience to the target readers. |
