A Report On The E-C Translation Of Climate Change For Dummies(Excerpts)

In the context of global warming,extreme weather and frequent resulting natural disasters are receiving growing attention from countries around the world,and how to deal with this climate crisis has become a hot topic.There is a growing number of books on climate change,and authors expect their work to raise awareness of environmental issues.Translating such works is beneficial to disseminate the causes beneath the surface and helpful to facilitate people’s consciousness to solve the problem within the limit of their ability.This practice report is based on the translation of the excerpts from the popular science book Climate Change for Dummies,which is a comprehensive and systematic introduction to climate change,aiming to raise the public awareness of climate change and environmental protection.Chapter 10 and Chapter 11 selected for this practice introduce the measures taken and a series of climate agreements signed in response to climate change.The report analyzes the characteristics of the popular science text and the translation skills applied in depth.The language of the text is formal while using some colloquialisms to add interest and call for action to address climate change,which presents translation difficulties in terms of language,culture,and communication.The transformation in the linguistic,cultural,and communicative dimensions of Hu Gengshen’s Eco-Translatology can precisely guide the author to translate this text.Under the guidance of Eco-Translatology,this report discusses the problems encountered in translating this text from the three perspectives of linguistic,cultural,and communicative dimensions,and explores the corresponding techniques applied with examples in the translation practice.In this practice,the translating techniques of conversion,repetition,and reconstruction have been adopted to handle the lexical and syntactical problems in the linguistic dimension,making the translation more logical and authentic;cultural gaps and culture-loaded words in the cultural dimension have been effectively dealt with by annotation and shift;the compensation and specification techniques were employed to address tone and ambiguous expressions in the communicative level so as to realize the intent of the original text.It is hoped that this report has clarified some general difficulties in translating popular science texts from the linguistic,cultural,and communicative dimensions and employed relatively universal techniques to handle them,which can provide some reference for future translation of popular science works.
