A Study Of Cultural Words In A Chinese Dictionary For Learners And Teachers

Comparing with normal words,cultural words have special implicit cultural connotation,which are difficult for students who learn Chinese as a foreign language.Thus,we should pay more attention for this topic.Export-oriented Chinese learner’s dictionary is served for Chinese teachers and students.Definitions and example sentences of dictionary can provide some important references for teaching and studying.The paper chose A Chinese Dictionary for Learners and Teachers as a research material to study cultural words of the dictionary from word-collection,the definition and example sentences.The aspect of word-collection,we took material cultural words,institutional cultural words,behavioral cultural words and ideological cultural words as the classification standard.At last,we chose 240 cultural words from the dictionary to study and analyze.We found the amount of cultural words can’t meet user’s learning need,especially ideological cultural words were less than others.The aspect of definition,the editor controlled the grade of definition meta-language reasonably,which was accorded with user’s language level.The aspect of definition content,some cultural words were short of relevant cultural explanations.The form of definition was mainly about processing definition form,which was too simple to explain the word.The aspect of example sentences,the amount of sentences was not enough for user’s learning.However,the grade of words of example sentences were accorded with user’s language level,helping them to understand the meaning of sentences.Besides,some content of sentences was not correct and lacked of cultural information.Therefore,we proposed the following suggestion:Firstly,we can add the amount of cultural words,especially ideological cultural words.Secondly,we can supply and explain the relevant cultural information and the origin of cultural words.Thirdly,we can combine the form of definition with media convergence,which made it diversity.Finally,we should improve the quality of example sentences to enhance the authority of dictionaries,which can supply better service for teachers and students.
