| The 2022 edition of the English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education clearly outlines the objectives of developing core competences,namely,developing students’ language ability,cultural awareness,thinking quality and learning ability.The English subject core competencies promote the improvement of students’ comprehensive language proficiency,guide them to develop correct values and foster key abilities and qualities that are adapted to their lifelong development.At junior high school stage,English reading teaching plays a critical role in the objective of cultivating students’ subject core competencies.Therefore,there is no doubt about the importance of putting core competencies into practice in English reading teaching in junior high school.This study reveals the present condition of English reading teaching in junior high school by using the study method of questionnaires and classroom observations to identify the current problems in the execution of English reading teaching in junior high school.The survey finds that at present,junior high school English teachers do not focus enough on the development of core competencies in reading teaching and have a hard time using them in the actual classroom.The current status of reading teaching implementation is not optimistic,mainly reflected in the imbalance in the setting of reading teaching objectives;The concept of reading teaching design is backward;The process machinery of reading teaching implementation;The evaluation index of reading teaching is single.Based on the survey reality,this study uses reverse teaching design as a theoretical basis to sort out its connotation and framework,and explore its unique value in implementing the subject core competences in English reading teaching.This study makes an attempt to suggest a procedure for reverse teaching design in junior high school English reading teaching,which includes three steps: determining teaching objectives,establishing evaluation evidence,and designing learning activities.By clarifying the principles and methods of reverse teaching design for junior high school English,this article explores new paths for the design and practice of junior high school English reading teaching from the viewpoint of developing core competences,laying the groundwork for effective execution of reverse teaching design cases in subsequent classroom teaching.This study selects the Reading discourse of Unit 8 in the first book of Grade 8 in Junior high school English textbook of Yilin Edition for teaching practice.On the basis of the previous contextual situation diagnosis,the design and execution of English reading teaching in junior high school follows the process of reverse teaching design,and the feasibility and implementation effect of the reverse teaching design case are evaluated through pre and post student interviews and teacher consultation.The evaluation results show that reverse design of junior high school English reading teaching has been effective in the development of students’ English subject core competences.The feasibility and applicability of teaching design is high,providing a theoretical and practical basis for the design and execute instruction based on the English core competencies.As a result of this pedagogical design and execution,further directions for reflection and improvement are proposed: Firstly,design learning activities as a whole to make links more relevant.Then,focus on students’ differences and encourage them at different levels to make common progress.Finally,create teaching contexts around large units to organically infiltrate the cultivation of subject core competences into the design of learning activities.The findings of the study is that the present state of English reading teaching in junior high schools is not satisfactory in this context of subject core competences.Thus,the study explores the principles and processes of junior high school English reading teaching design that target core competences requires a methodology of reverse teaching design.The basic design process is to determine teaching objectives,establish evaluation criteria,and design learning activities.Finally,this research revealed that reverse design in junior high school English reading teaching was productive in enforcing core competencies.At the meantime,given the implementation of English reading teaching in junior high school is not as expected and the many problems existing in implementing core competences among teachers,relevant research suggestions are proposed,namely,deepening theoretical learning to promote teacher professional development,improving teaching design to facilitate the achievement of core competencies,and enhancing resources to support teaching capacity. |
